Catholic Bishops of Australia must urge all their church members to reply to question 17 on the census sheet completed on June 30.

The questions asks: "What is each person's religious denomination?" It is the only question on the census for which a reply is optional.

Town &Country. Setting the Pace. Town & Country Permanent Building Society 297 Murray Street Perth Telephone 327 3333.

Heads of all churches are similarly expected to urge their congregations to fill in the question. (In the 1976 census 1.6 million Australians, 11.75 percent of the total population, did not answer the question on religious denomination). Archbishop Goody backed the Catholic Bishops' Conference recommendation saying that the information gained from the census would be useful to the Catholic Church for future planning. "The information gives us a statistical picture across Australia, a profile of the people in our Catholic parishes, their age and the number of children they have," Archbishop Goody said. "At local level the diocese and the parish can make better plans for pastoral care by knowing the number of Catholics in a district who need to be contacted, the number of children who need religious instruction in Catholic or state schools, the number of aged people who may require attention, and the number of young people moving towards marriage. "An accurate knowledge of the distribution of our Catholic population will enable us to plan more carefully the placement of priests and religious brothers and sisters, the establishment of new churches and schools and the use of other pastoral resources."
