A statue mounted prominently on the driveway into Aquinas College symbolises a movement from e arth to infinity a ccording to its author, Dan Mazzotti, who came from Italy to Australia 29 years ago and has been senior art master at the college for the past 13 years. The statue is made of synthetic resin built up over a steel core and ground to a finish with a tint suggestive of natural sandstone. To mark the feast day of Edmund Ignatius Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, Archbishop Goody unveiled and later blessed the new s tatue before an assembly of students last Monday. C ommissioned by the students of Aquinas Junior School who have raised funds to pay for it, the statue echoes the theme Come To Me. The face of Christ is framed in sections of a cross that extend from the abstract body that rises from the pedestal in an infinite movement of infinity as an e xpression of the human nature of Christ. Lifetime of trial firmed r esolve The late polish primate was headed for a lifetime of struggle and confrontation when in 1948 he was appointed to lead Poland's senior see of Warsaw and Gniezni. The signs of struggle were in the air in 1953 when A rchbishop Wyszynski was nominated cardinal but he dared not leave Poland lest he be forbidden to return. That same year he refused to condemn Bishop Kaczmarek of Kielce who had been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Cardinal Wyszynski was arrested, charged for breaking a 1950 churchstate agreement and was imprisoned for three years. "Better to be a priest who is laughed at than a czar who is given glory," cardinal Wyszynski wrote during his three-year house arrest and his whereabouts kept secret. In 1956, when the cardinal emerged he attributed his release to the Black Madonna. Leaving the train in Rome on his way to receiving the red hat promised while he was under arrest, he said "I bring you the blessing of Our Lady of Czestochowa." In June 1956 workers' and students' riots erupted in Poznan and the entire country was in ferment. In October a bloodless palace revolution overthrew the hardline Stalinist
