One of the first to be transferred to the new $22.7 million seven -storey hospital of Saint John of God last Saturday was Mrs Janic Thair of Karrinyup.
Sharing in the transport and baggage handling were Sister Adams (left) and Sister Brenda vice provincial of the St. John of God Sisters. Although the hospital is not to be opened officially until May 1 all services are now coming into operation, including an eight-theatre surgical block and completely new kitchen and staff dining quarters. St. John's, with 355 beds, becomes the largest private hospital in Australia and one of the very few having the function of a teaching hospital. During construction, the number of available beds was reduced to 282. The total available in the new complex is an increase of 73 on former capacity. The construction of the new hospital meant the demolition of the three storey open wards that had become characteristic of the earlier buildings along with the wide jarrah verandahs. Modern smaller wards and private rooms with ensuite facilities are being provided to replace the former large wards. Redevelopment of the maternity hospital enabled reallocation of existing space to provide 32 additional beds in comfortable, attractive surroundings.
