POPE John Paull II offered no for the radical priests upport s and nuns of the Philippines t oday when he spoke out against the involvement of the clergy in politics. "You are priests and religious," he said. "You are not social or political leaders or officials of a temporal power."

The Polish-born pontiff made his position clear within a few hours of arriving for a six-day visit to the Philippines. The pope said: "Let us not be under the illusion that we are serving the Gospel if we dilute our charisma through an exaggerated interest in the wide field of temporal problems." He stressed his opposition to social reform through revolution and at the same time gently chided the Marcos Government. "Even in exceptionable situations that may at times arise, one can never justify any violation of the fundamental dignity of the human person or of the basic rights that safeguard this dignity," he said. "Legitimate concern for the security of the nation, as demanded by the common good, could lead to the temptation of subjugating to the State the human being and his or her dignity and rights. "Any apparent conflict between the exigencies of security and of the citizens' basic rights must be resolved according to the fundamental .principle -- upheld always by the church — that social organisation exists only for the service of man and for the protection of his dignity, and that it cannot claim to serve the common good when human rights are not safeguarded." But, he said, "The human person has a need which is even deeper, a hunger which is even greater than bread can satisfy -- it is the hunger of the human heart for the immensity of God." This hunger could only be satisfied by Christ, he said, "for he alone is the source of life." Citing Christ's prayer for Christian unity, he said that the "Divisions between Christians" were a source of sadness.

"We are saddened because we cannot yet share together in the one bread and the one cup. May this sadness prompt us to action," the pope said. The pontiff also cited the Eucharist as the driving force behind missionary work, saying it "should also deepen our desire for the whole human family to come to the light of faith. It should inspire us to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to all those who do not yet know him." The pope praised efforts of Pakistani Catholics "to bring the message of salvation, in a spirit of dialogue and respect, to those in your own country who do not know Christ."
