The Melkite population has grown to an estimated 20,000 in Australia as a result of migration from the Middle East. There are some 6,000 Melkites in Melbourne and in Perth some 100 families of the rite are visited occasionally by a Melkite priest. Patriarch Maximos said that it was hoped to appoint soon a Mellcite bishop in Australia.
