This historic photograph (right) is a Ming commentary on the 50 years o riesthood that Archbishop Goody celebrates this week, and also on a egment of the West Australian priesthood of half-a-century ago. The picture was taken in Propaganda ollege, Rome, in 1926 when the late Monsignor Edmund Sullivan (centre seated), who died last month, was about PERTH, WA: December 18-24, 1980 to return to Australia after his TELEPHONE: (09) 328 1388 ordination to the priesthood. To his left and right are the late Monsignor Edward Collins who died while at Shenton Park, and the late Monsignor Fred Byrne who died when t Albany as vicar-general of Bunbury locese under Bishop Goody. Rear left is Launcelot Goody, then a student in second philosophy, along with Father Frank Ryan (right), now in r etirement at Glendalough, both of w hom were ordained priests in 1930 on December 20. Rear centre is the late Archdeacon ohn McKay of Carnarvon, then a tudent in his first year of theology. Following ordination Dr. Goody ' ent to Yugoslavia to study Croatian hich he used in the districts of Midland and Spearwood while an ssistant in St. Mary's Cathedral. He served in Boulder, and then as arish priest of Toodyay, and had olunteered as a chaplain to the army w hen in 1941 Archbishop Prendiville requested him to establish St. Charles' Seminary Guildford for which he personally recruited the first 20 students among whom is his auxiliary, Bishop 4E0:141041114411*(411V54441tib . *104§rOlt* •-1.'411:11tr Peter Quinn. Now Monsignor Goody, he was parsh priest of Bedford and labouring on he building of his new presbytery hen he was told of his appointment as uxiliary bishop in 1951. Three years later he was the founding 'shop of Bunbury and in 1968 he was made Archbishop of Perth, the city that ad seen his entry into the Catholic hurch and the scene of his first years of riesthood.
