Christ over the Swan
Priestly chapter At Saint Charles Seminary on / Tuesday night, Archbishop j Goody celebrated his 50th year 0 of priesthood by blessing and r dedicating a statue of the Sacred Heart that faces one of the winding reaches of the S wan near Barkers Bridge. Archbishop Goody was a priest of just 10 years when in 1940 he was commissioned by Archbishop Prendiville to start a local seminary. War restrictions however, decided otherwise and plans for a new building at Attadale were shelved. The idea of a seminary might have been abandoned too had not the historic Padbury residence come onto the market in 1941. Archbishop Prendiville and Dr Goody decided that the spacious home, with its large rooms, including a ballroom could be adapted for a seminary Dr Goody personally recruited the 20 students enrolled in 1942 and became founding rector for the next six years, during which enrolment rose steadily to over 40 / youths doing secondary and philosophy courses.
In-his homily, Archbishop Goody explained the significance of Saint Charles as a seminary patron, the choice having been made by Archbishop Prendiville. St. Charles Borromeo was a key churchman at the time of the 0 Council of Trent and was in the r forefront of the reform of clergy j rchbishop Goody at the dedication of a statue of the Sacred Heart that overlooks the Swan River from the banks of the life when he went to the diocese of Milan. t Charles' seminary property. VATICAN CITY: Pope John Paul used All Souls Day, November 2, to make a plea for peace between Iran and Iraq and for a resolution of the unrest in El Salvador that is virtually civil war in which thousands have died. "On this day I would like to recall all the dead of this year, and in particular the victims of natural catastrophes and of the too numerous episodes of violence, kidnappings, terrorism occuring in various nations of the w orld," he said at his noon angelus talk. The Pope said that the war between Iran and Iraq had caused "bloody battles between
armies and the bombing of cities and defenseless populations" but that world opinion "seems to accommodate too easily to the spectacle of this very terrible destruction." He urged the thousands in St. Peter's Square to pray for peace and to "awaken the desire to resolve the differences through negotiation, in respect for the integrity of human, national and territorial rights in the countries involved in conflicts.", Pope John Paul also mourned the deaths in El Salvador "and other countries of the world tormented by a chronic prolonging of violence and killings that provoke mourning in families and
the church community." "I would like to renew, also in the name of compassion for the dead, a sorrowful appeal in order that the sentiment of reconciliation required by the Christian conscience and by love for one's homeland may prevail on all sides," he added. Taking up the idea of family which had been the theme of the Synod, he continued: "All Souls Day is a special day for the family. "The family is led, on this day, to the places where their nearest and dearest repose. "They meet them, in silence, in prayer, in meditation, near their tombs."
