East Victoria Park's neighbouring Catholic schools are to join forces in 1981 amalgamating Years Five Six and Seven and introducing a second stream in Year Eight. To be known as Xavier College, the new school will have an enrolment of 400 co-education through to Year Seven. Formerly, boys were streamed off at Year Five, causing enrolment difficulties for the primary section. More than a hundred parents have taken part in planning discussions during which six models for the development of the schools were presented for consideration. The parents felt that the schools were not sufficiently known so they conducted a letter drop of 10,000 brochures in a area from Kewdale to Armadale. Fifteen enrolments are thought to have resulted from the move. Mr Peter Hann, brother of Aquinas headmaster Brother Terry Hann, and who became first lay principal after the withdrawal of the Christian Brothers in 1978, will be principal of the new school. Mercy Sister Mary Keeley will be teacher in charge of the primary section. (0 Continued page 2)

The 1980 Social Justice Statement, released by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace deals with the social and political responsibilities of Christians.
Town & Country. Setting the Pace. Town & Country Permanent Building Society 297 Murray Street Perth Telephone 3273333.
The statement looks firstly at world poverty and draws attention to the fact that a fifth of the world's population live in absolute poverty — many of them in our own geographical region. Powerless before the world's wealthiest companies and the superpowers, their poverty is made by their powerlessness. In Australia as well, poverty and powerlessness are widespread. We live in a society established by violence to the Aboriginal people. Violence in relationships and social structures continues. Widespread poverty goes hand in hand with the threatened erosion of human rights. Some two million people in Australia have seriously inadequate housing, medical services and even food and clothing. At the same time, public dissent is being restricted by new laws.
Poverty and powerlessness are a challenge to the Christian Churches in different parts of the world. Generally, however, this renewed sense of purpose within the Church has led to a call for a preferential option for the poor. This means that the poor and powerless should have a preferential claim on the church's and society's resources. To make sure this option for the poor and powerless becomes real in the Australian Church, the use of church resources and personnel should be reviewed. A complete review of church activities — who is being served, who is being neglected — is called for. This review should lead to a thorough pastoral plan which incorporates: •An analysis of society with particular reference to the needs of the poor; •An examination of possible responses the Church could make; •Setting priorities and targets.
