Archbishop Goody
Archbishop Goody believes that death sentences generally should be commuted to an a dequate gaol term but that the State should r etain the right of exacting capital punishment. "The State should remain in possession of the ultimate sanction which it could use in extreme cases" he told the annual conference of the Knights of the Southern Cross. As discussion of the topic continues in political \and other circles this week, he told The Record that he agreed that in today's circumstances it might not be necessary to invoke capital punishment nor to carry out death sentences. But he confirmed his earlier belief that circumstances might arise when the State would be justified in exacting the extreme penalty. Archibishop Goody insisted that a clear distinction had to be made between the principle of capital punishment and its application in society. He said that in advocating the cornmuting generally of death sentences to imprisonment the "adequate term" was the important consideration. He said that he did not believe that a Christian was required automatically to be opposed to the principle of capital punishment.
