The proposed widening of Beatrice Street by five metres on each side to serve on-off ramps and a freeway flyover will bring a vastly-increased traffic flow to within a few metres of the church door and slice five metres off an alreadynarrow school playground. The parishioners' fears of this development were expressed this week by Mr. Michael Grimes, a member of the parish council.

on the west of the freeway and Cedric street on the east were unnecessary. The ramps at Hutton Street, Karrinyup Road and Delawney Street would be only fractionally farther apart than the distance now separating Hutton and Powis streets. A ccording to Redemptorist researcher, Father Michael Mason the Church in Australia will have to look at the effectiveness of its parish structures. "The problem with the parish structure is that although it will remain useful as a unit for the provision of services it is increasingly ineffectual for primary pastoral care," he said. "It is just too large and the contact lay ministries are developing to supplement the decline in priests the basic Christian community structures are not developing in time to take the place of the parish. "It is proving todemand such a fundamenta I change in our attitudes to parish and ministry that it is not showing signs yet of getting off the ground in Australia, even though parishes find it increasingly difficult to function in pastoral care. "It isgoing tobethecauseofa severe crisis in the future that is evident in the declining number of people we are able to see. We are not able to reach the people who need the care.
