PERTH, THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 1980

FIRST MASS; NEW CENTRE Over 350 people packed the hall of the Burrendah Mass centre for the opening Mass last Sunday. T he new premises, w hich include much needed catechetical facilities, are the first step in a Catholic project for one of Perth's most rapidly expanding areas south of Leach Highway. The new venture illustrates the heavy initial costs facing parishes in newly rapidly developing suburbs. For 1.78 acres on Pinetree Gully Road the parish has had to pay $ 148,000; much of the land is needed for the centre, a future church and future presbytery. Much of it also required for parking cars. For $230,000 the parish has a spacious hall 13.5 by

In the 17,500-word pastoral, Bishop Hickey emphasized that the liturgy was a way of entering into the mystery of God and an expression of religious faith. He also stressed the dramatic quality of good liturgy. Bishop Hickey said that he wanted to reach out in a special way to Catholics who no longer, or only rarely, participated in the Sunday liturgy. "I ask you who read this letter to speak to o ur absent brothers and sisters for me. "Let them know we miss them and earn e stly invite them to come home."

PARENTS The bishop urged par ents to anticipate the crises of faith that their children experience and w hich often lead to absence from Sunday Mass. He suggested "sharing the meaning, importance and genuineness of t heir religious faith outside of the liturgical context."

to the lack of liturgical change in the preceding 400 years and to insufficient preparation for an e xplanation of the changes made by the council.

"SOURCE" Discussing liturgy as a way of entering into the mystery of God, Bishop Hickey said: "It is a deep experience of the mystery of God that is the source and goal of our life of prayer and our life of faith.

the ceremonies and rituals of the church, depending on the varying cultures that the church encountered. "At these points in history the goal of such a daptations was to intensify the experience of the mystery of Christ and God's saving power for the people of diverse cultures." Discussing the dramatic quality of good liturgy, Bishop Hickey s tressed that "while liturgy is similar to drama, it is not the same as drama."

"The liturgy, like good drama," he said, "seeks to involve the congregation in a deep experience ofthe meaning of life's joys and sorrows. 19 metres and a similar area providing five teaching, one resource and one kitchen area plus a temporary sacristy. Mass will now have a permanent home in Burrendah following three years when it was celebrated in State schools and more recently in the Air Force Association hall. Still part of Brentwood parish, the new pastoral area extends for the present to Burrendah Drive. A further parish south of Leach Highway is planned to extend west of the Freeway and probably centred on Murdoch Drive depending on the availability of a suitable site.
