The first. . . Perth's first Catholic church, and for a time its cathedral, took a new lease of life at a dedication ceremony dedication Mass last week on the feast of St. John the Evangelist. It was 136 years to the day since Father John Brady began building the church just 19 days after he had reached Fremantle with a stop at Albany. The foundation stone was laid on January 16 1844. It is estimated that there could have been as few as thirty Catholics in the Perth region at the time; nonCatholics gave generously to the project. Archbishop Goody told the rather small congregation that turned up for last weeks' ceremony that it was a nostalgic occasion. For that reason he offered Mass in Latin, the only Ianguage that the humble church had ever known. The vestments worn by the

archbishop and his assistants, Dean Foley and Father Barry Hickey, were the only decent ones that could be found from the turn of the century. Archbishop Goody noted that this first place of Catholic worship in WA is also the oldest standing cathedral church in the whole of Australia. In its uncompleted state it was a Catholic school in 1844 until Father Joostens moved down to Albany after Father Brady had left on February 11 after a stay of just two months.
