CHUM 140 YEARS' Bishops in U.S. WORK FOR lift vote to BORIGINES
"We are not in the business of symbolic gestures, when so many priests, Religious and scores of thousands of dollars are being committed by the Church to Aboriginal care," Archbishop Goody said yesterday.
You can put one, or even a hundred, tents in the grounds of Saint Mary's Cathedral, but it
is no substitute for the care that has to be given to each Aboriginal individually," he said. The archbishop made these remarks in a resume of points which he had made in on-the-spot interviews with groups outside Saint Mary's Cathedral last Sunday.
'COULD' - NOT 'WOULD' NOW 'WILL' INTERVIEW
Lines of communication got crossed at last Sunday's on-the-spot interview outside Saint Mary's Cathedral. Asked if he would visit Aboriginal camps, Archbishop Goody questioned what good would come simply of looking at situations that he and others had seen on many occasions. To further questioning he replied that if he wished he "could" come with a busload of people who have been actively working on behalf of the Church in Aboriginal care. . A news report quoted him as saying he "would" send a busload. Phone calls to Saint Mary's Cathedral theta started asking when the bus would depart. Faced with the impossible task of unravelling a complicated communication, the archbishop has decided that a "bus" will go on the tour of metropolitan sites, taking himself and key R eligious and lay personnel who are actively working for Aboriginals.
The archbishop was at the Cathedral to celebrate the solemn Mass of Pentecost. At the end of Mass he had an interview in the sacristy with Mr. Robert Bropho, who had established his children in a tent on the Cathedral grounds at 8 p.m. on the Friday evening. The tent was removed at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
CARE SINCE 1846 "Personal care to Aborigines is what the Catholic Church, like so many other voluntary bodies, have given in this State since Father Salvado headed into the bushlands in 1846," the archbishop added. "Today there are four priests working full time on Aboriginal care when the staffing of parishes, to say nothing of other special works, is at a critical stage." The archbishop singled out the priests. "Father Bryan Tiernan, Pallottine, who has worked extensively with Aborigines in the country for the past 14 years,

is now working for them in the archdiocesan areas and has gathered a Christian community at a weekly Mass at Embleton. "Father John Leummen and a team of helpers has built up an extraordinary complex at Pallottine Centre, housing some 100 Aboriginal youth who are attending, local schools and training centres to enable them to cope with today's living situations. At Kalgoorlie, he said,
Father Toop and the Little Sisters of the Poor had poured in unbelievable time, patience and care into a refuge and aged home for Aboriginals in a quarter of Kalgoorlie that was for so long a haven for derelicts. The Brothers of Saint John of God had recently joined this task force, he added. "In Perth, Sister Bernardine, on her own initiative, has given heroic service in trying to bring some hope to the people in Norbert Street; Servite Father Martin Jenco has recently joined in this work. "The Daughters of Charity have helped in many ways through the West Perth De Paul centre and the activities of Sister Peter and Sister Pat." (CONTINUED PAGE 3)
