The Pave praises Dr. Goody

The following letter from Pope Paul to Archbishop Goody was read at the official Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral to mark the archbishop's 25 years' episcopate.

TO OUR ESTEEMED BROTHER, LAUNCELOT JOHN GOODY, ARCHBISHOP OF PERTH. You are coming to the happy completion of twentyfive years as a Bishop. The occasion will surely recall clearly to your mind the willingness and joy with which you first accepted the heavy responsibilities attached to the high office of teaching, guiding and sanctifying the People of God. We are eager to join you in commemorating and celebrating your jubilee. In the first place we must give thanks to God for the great favour He has conferred on you. We wish also to offer you publicly our • congratulations and warmest good wishes for the future. • Although we are far away, we have followed with close interest and personal approval your fine work. You have shown daily care for your sacred duties and • great initiative in seeing to the many needs of the v arious groups of faithful entrusted to your care. We have not forgotten how, after your three years as , Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Perth, you were judged worthy to be appointed the first Bishop of Sunbury, when that diocese was initially set up.

In widely-scattered parishes

We know well that you had many difficult obstacles to meet and overcome in caring for the widely-scattered parishes of such a large area, in firmly establishing the works of the apostolate and of the Catholic faith in that newly-formed church community. Finally, when in the year 1968 the Church in Perth was without an Archbishop, we turned to you, esteemed Brother, because we knew you to be a diligent and concerned pastor, generously self-giving, most devoted to your people. You have shown unwearied energy, backed by sound learning, and spiritual zeal, in your efforts to see t hat the decrees of the Second Vatican Council produced their effect, and you have given clear evidence of your loyalty to this Apostolic See. For these and many other reasons, we open our heart in gratitude to you, esteemed Brother. We beg the Holy Spirit to give you strong guidance and tranquility of heart.
