AN IMMEDIATE GIFT TO ITALY
Australian Catholic Relief has despatched immediately a gift of $10,000 to assist Italian earthquake victims. Father P. G. J. O'Reilly, Perth Director of A.C.R., explained that it is part of A.C.R. policy to retain a certain proportion of funds in readiness for such physical disasters as they occur from time to time around the World. The major part of the funds, he explained, are disbursed as quickly as possible to self help projects in poor communities in the developing countries. The major source of funds for A.C.R. was from the Lenten Project Compassion appeal. A.C.R. received other funds from Freedom From Hunger and Austcare. Fr. O'Reilly said that it should be possible for all parishes to have lodged their Project Compassion monies at the Catholic Church Office by Monday, May 31, so that the funds could be despatched to their destinations as quickly as possible. A full list of parish contributions will appear in The Record on June 3. Already there were hopeful signs of this year's total amount outstripping last year's effort. Of thirty-two parish returns so far, 21 had registered increases, in three cases the amount being doubled from last year. • A special Mass to pray for the victims of the recent Italian earthquake will be celebrated in St. Mary's Cathedral at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 16.
