1 Abortion "not Catholic lust • Issue"; clergy

DES MOINES (NC).— Mormon, Baptist and Methodist leaders in national right-to-life organisations agreed here recently that abortion is not just a "Catholic issue."

• 0 , Last Tuesday night, in a solemn gathering of

the archdiocesan clergy, Archbishop Goody olessed the holy oils, the containers of which are pictured above. The blessed oils for Baptism, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick were then distributed to all the parishes as a sign of their link with the priesthood, expressed in the bishop of the diocese. The concelebrated Mass was at the same time a renewal by the priests of their personal commitment to the priesthood of Christ and the sharing in the ministry of the diocese.

White, a Mormon, said that his Church disciplined its members, even with excommunication, when they were "involved in any way with an abortion." Mr. Holbrook, a Baptist pastor in Texas, agreed that abortion is more than a Catholic issue. He said: "Some of the mainline Protestant denominations have not been as strong about abortion as they should be because of the erosion of their biblical basis. -

A "beautiful, joyful, ohappy" season

vikTICAN CITY (NC). — With the approach of Easter, Pope Paul described the Easter season as joyful, "beautiful, happy."

"We are nearing the celebration of the tragic drama of the cross," he told those gathered in St. Peter's Square for his midday blessing. He asked them rhetorically: "How can we arrive at it with unconquerable exulting in our hearts? "Is it not rather a drama of pain, of sacrifice, of the death of Christ?

"Why and how can we rejoice in it?" The 78-year-old Pope, who began the Lenten season in a sombre mood, even speaking of his own death, explained further. "We know why," he said. "Because it is the drama of our salvation, because it is the extreme expression of Christ's heroic love, the extreme expression of God's infinite love for us." Pope Paul rejected the view that the story of Calvary belonged to the past and was extraneous
