Price to rise The

price

of

The

Record will rise to 20 cents per issue from the next in first issue month — July 4. The manager, Mr. Edward Van Heemst, said that only a massive increase in circulation — more than one third — would be able to stave off such a rise. Small independent papers are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the inflationary pressures, particularly the rising cost of paper. In addition, small papers are finding it competitively more difficult to acquire the display advertising that is going increasingly to the larger publications and other media and which are a big factor in off-setting the cost of publication. The Adelaide diocesan paper, The Southern Cross, comparable in size to The Record, has been 20 cents for some time. The Sydney diocesan Catholic Weekly and the Advocate of Melbourne are both 30 cents and the former is under severe pressure from rising costs.
