church and school property in order to make way for the extension of Murray Street. Last year, negotiations were started to re-establish a primary school at the site of the former St. Francis Xavier's school, East Perth. There was insufficient land at the East Perth site and it proved impossible to negotiate with surrounding properties for a suitable price so the propect was abandoned. Mrs. Parry, principal of St. Patrick's school, said that had the land been purchased at East Perth at the high prices requested, the school would have come into the speculative category and would not have been sure of attracting a Government grant; nor, she believed, would the Catholic Education Commission have supported the school under such conditions. St. Patrick's has been an all lay school for three years and involves a staff of six teachers.
