Combined Cathedral service Cyclone destroyed to launch Women's Year Church buildings

The launching of International Women's Year, 1975, was accompanied by a combined service held in St. Mary's Cathedral, last Sunday. prayer of A large gathering of women filled the cathedral and shared in a prayer service that had been prepared by the Catholic Women's League of W.A. and which was introduced by Miss I. Palandri, State president of the league. Readings were done by the Rev. Dorothy Whacker (Congregationalist) and Mrs. Scurlock (chairman of Australian Church Women). The Combined Country Women's Choir led the singing of hymns and also presented Sibelius's "Song of Peace". In the unavoidable absence of Archbishop Goody. Father Barry Hickey, Director of the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau, presided over the gathering. In extending a welcome to the congregation, he said that .the Church had said officially that it fully supported the aims and goals of the Year.

Miss Casey then went on to enumerate the motives of International Women's Year which marks the 25th anniversary of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women. She concluded by saying that while any discrimination existed there would be no true peace. She urged each of her listeners to take a rightful place in work, family or community and to develop her ability and responsibility.

Cyclone Tracy, which devastated Darwin early on Christmas Day, destroyed a number of Church buildings, including a village for homeless children. Fortunately no lives were lost in the destruction of the buildings which also included the city's old Catholic catedral. The village for homeless children, conducted by the Canossian Daughters of Charity, was flattened in the cyclone. The children have since being moved into another hostel. Also destroyed were the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart convent in the suburb of Nightcliff, the home of the local superior of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (also at Nightcliff), and two houses of

the mission supply headquarters. A 'number of other Church buildings were damaged. The new cathedral of St. Mary's - Star of the Sea had part of its roof blown off. while the home of Bishop John O'Loughlin, M.S.C., was also damaged. Damage was also susNightcliff tained by church and presbytery. St. John's College (part of the primary section roof ripped off), and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, Salonika (the whole of the secondary school roof blown away).

In addition, a big shed at the mission supply headquarters was damage.d and a nearby house on the same property was unroofed. Missions on Bathurst Island, Port Keats and Daly River escaped damage. Three Brothers of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart — an electrician. a builder. and a bricklayer — were assigned to go to Darwin to help in reconstruction work. One of the Brothers is from N.S.W. and the other two from missions in Papua New Guinea. ( • See also page 2
