First Victorian for Rhodesian heads' interfaith Melbourne See meeting on "brutality"

The sixth bishop to lead the Archdiocese of Melbourne in its 125 years of history is its first Victorian, Most Rev. Thomas Francis Little. His appointment was announced by pope Paul this week. Archbishop - elect Little succeeds West Australian born CarJames dinal Knox who was appointed to the diocese in 1967 following a long career as a Church. diplomat in Japan, A frica and India, and who has now joined the central administration of the Church in the Congregations for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments. The towering figure in Melbourne's strong Catholic history is Archbishop Daniel Mannix who came to Australia from Ireland in 1912 to spend the next 51 years as an Australian bishop, 46 of them as Archbishop of Melbourne.

Archbishop - elect Little grew up in Essendon. He is one of three sons of the late Mr and Mrs Gerald Little; the other two sons are both doctors of -medicine.

At the time of his death on November 6, 1967, he was within six months of his hundredth birthday. The first Australian to head Melbourne archdiocese was Archbishop Justin Simonds, the first Australian Archbishop (of Hobart, at the time), but who through declining health was only able to lead Melbourne for four short years after the death of Archbishop Mannix.

The new Archbishop went to St. Patrick's College, Ballarat, then for his priesthood studies to Corpus Christi College. Werribee and Propaganda College, Rome where he was ordained in 1950.
