This appeared on Page Two of the first issue of the "West Australian Catholic Record" which was published on July 6, 1874. It was printed at the Orphanage Press, Subiaco, part of the institution today known as the McAuley Centre, Wembley. The printer and publisher was Thomas Bryan. For four years from the time of its inception the newspaper was published each month and the price was 6d. per copy.
On July 6, 1878, the first of the fortnightly editions appeared and the subscription was made 10 shillings a year, payable in advance. By 1885, it had become a weekly publication, selling at 4d. a copy but the annual subscription was 15 shillings.
Made up of eight closely-printed pages. the paper received its first advertisements after four months — in the issue of November. 6, 1874. One read: "T. Cunningham, house painter and glazier, begs respectfully to inform his friends and the public generally that he has commenced business in Perth and hopes by good workmanship and close attention to business to merit a share of patronage." The other two advertisers were Phillip Mac, boot and shoe maker, and W. M. Miller, practical engraver.
In the second issue there appeared a notice that "Persons desirous of becoming subscribers to The Catholic Record can do so on application to Mr. C. O'Mahony, Perth.'

The first editorial
amis. In the leading editorial of the first issue, The Record said: "With three well-edited political and commercial papers published in the colony, there can be no dearth of secular news to those who are desirous of obtaining such. . . . The supply of Catholic news is by no means what it should be . . . But considering that their (other papers') character is political and commercial it must be seen that the amount of space allotted to us can be but small — as small indeed it is. "And there will not be much difficulty in surmising that, however eager the desire to be impartial and to do us full justice, their opinions on many points concirnaig us must be one-sided and unfair. "The writers are of religious convictions opposed to ours; the majority of the readers stand in the same relation towards us: and the matters under discussion are, oftentimes, the very questions which divide us . . .

He said that he would not want the parents such as those present at. the function accepting the arrival of major government support as a happy excuse for withdrawing their own efforts on behalf of such schools as Marist. "It is my firm belief,' he said, "that one of thc great strengths of this school is its sense of community, its 'binding ethos. "'This is not just a product of the common beliefs of so many of its members, but is also very much a result of their willinaTiess to make very real and mutual sacrifices in support of tbe school.
