Archbishop speaks on the Charismatic Movement The following statement on the "Catholic Charismatic Renewal Prayer Groups" has been issued by Archbishop Goody:
As the Church renews itself today under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit, one of the forms that this overall renewal takes is popularity called the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This attempt to describe a wide-ranging of movement the Spirit in our day is not intended to suggest exclusive possession of the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit by any one group within the Church. Rather, we should be reminded that the whole nature and life of the Church is a gift of the Holy Spirit, outpoured in many and generous ways (cf. Constitution on the Church, n.12). It should also be noted that this form of renewal does not introduce any new doctrine, though it does encourage a greater awareness of. and openness to, the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, along with a deepening of faith and the growth of a more expectant faith. In the Archdiocese of Perth. the number of those becoming involved in the Renewal is increasing, so too is the number of prayer groups. These need to be offered solid teaching
and wise guidance both for their beginnings and for their development. It is also important that tnese prayer groups make their own contribution to a renewed liturgical and sacramental life within the Church. It is my earnest desire that priests will become involved and offer these groups priestly charisms. Such participation will strengthen solidity of doctrine and teaching, and will contribute towards a surer discernment of the authentic action of the Holy Spirit. The need for discernment was stressed by the Holy Father Pope Paul VI in his message of encouragement to the national leaders of the Renewal gathered in Rome during October last year. He said: . . even in the finest experiences of renewal, weeds can get mixed up with the good seed. Thus the need for discernment is indispensible, and this task belongs to those who have charge of the Church. "It belongs to them, particularly, not to quench the Spirit, but t o test everything and hold fast to what is good (1 Thess. 5.12, 19-21). For in this way is advanced the corn-
