Priest is also minister FOR THE FIRST TIME in Australia, and probably anywhere in the world, a joint service of induction was held by a Council of Churches in which a Catholic priest became resident minister for a whole community. In a striking A-frame Church, officials of the Tasmanian Council of Churches inducted Father Paul Conolly to serve all Christians of the isolated town of Strathgordon.
The service was led by a Congregationalist Minister, Rev. K. G. Blackwell, current president of the TCC, an Anglican Rural Dean, Rev. J. Beaverstock, the chairman of the Methodist Tasmanian District, Rev. H. Freeman, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the minister of Scots Church, Hobart, and Clerk to the Presbytery of Tasmania, Rev. G. A. Wood, and Archbishop Young's representative, Father P. Murphy, parish priest of New Norfolk. Father Conolly, Strathgordon's new minister, was assistant priest at New Norfolk until his appointment by the Tasmanian Council of Churches. The pioneer venture in ministry is one of the more dramatic achievements of ecumenical cooperation in Australia's Island State.
