POPE RENEWS APPEAL . .
REFUGEES NEED HELP!
A LL WEST AUSTRALIAN Catholics are urged to observe Sunday, October 10, as a Day of Prayer and Fasting for the East Pakistani refugees. This comes in the wake of an appeal by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, to people of all religions to set aside Sunday for fasting and prayers for the r efugees.
In a new and urgent call to aid the refugees, the Pope underlined the gap between the needs of the 800,000 'exhausted, sick and starving' refugee children — and their parents — and the relief being provided. He told a large crowd at St. Peter's Square on Sunday: "It does not exaggerated seem to hope thai the world will be moved by pity, and will send indispensable assistance — food, clothing, medicines, clothes. "It is necessary to wake up the sense of humanity of the world, to save the lives of innumerable human beings on the threshhold of death."
MUST BE MORE The Australian Bishops Conference, which met in Sydney in August, put out a statement calling for more action and aid for the East Pakistani's stranded in India. Praising the Indian Government for showing great humanity in accepting and sheltering the millions pouring out of East Pakistan, the Bishops said, in part: "We, the Catholic Bishops of Australia, Urge continued support for AUSTCARE (which co-ordinates the relief eff ort from Australia) by
Australians, and ask the Australian Government to do more to provide relief."
DONATIONS Father P. G. J. O'Reilly, Director of Project Compassion in the archdiocese, told The Record that $12,090.63 had been donated directly so far t o the Catholic Church Office, Victoria Square, for distribution by Australian Catholic Relief among the refugees, over and above the money collected by AUSTCARE. Donations are still being accepted. A naval guard of honour from HMAS Leeuwin present arms in the sa ictuary during the consecration as a trumpet blares. That was the scene at the annual Navy Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral on Sunday, which His Lordship, Bishop Peter Quinn, was principal celebrant. MASS AT Assisting him were Father P. McCrann and Father J. Sayers, Navy Chap'ain. The Mass marked the start of Navy Week.

CELIBACY WILL GET OPEN SYNOD AIRING
VATICAN CITY (NC). —Cardinal John Dearden of Detroit told pressmen there was no question that "celibacy is going to be discussed frankly and openly" at the Bishops' Synod. He said discussion was unlikely in the early days of the month-long world synod, however. He said the priesthood was being considered in terms of sound doctrinal basis and not merely from a of point sociological view.
Cardinal Dearden said he expected "open and candid discussion" of all the main questions involved in the two synod topics, priesthood and world justice.
Pope Paul's warning to synod participants at the opening Mass to beware of the pressures from the outside should be understood as meaning the Pope wanted "the synod to be open, candid and objective in its discussions."
