EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS FOR MELBOURNE
It was announced in Rome today that Pope Paul VI had approved Melbourne as the venue for the 40th International Eucharistic Congress to be held in 1973. The exact date and theme of the Congress have yet to be decided. Archbishop Knox of Melbourne, in announcing the approval of Melbourne as the venue, said it was a signal honour for the Catholic Church in Australia. Archbishop Knox indicated a programme of renewal and intensification of the faith would be launched throughout the Archdiocese of Melbourne next lent. He hoped that the Senate of Priests and the Pastoral Council of the Archdiocese would play a decisive part in the work of preparation for the c ongress. The Holy Father journeyed to Bombay and South America to honour the Church there by his presence on the occasion of other Eucharistic Congresses. The announcement of the Melbourne Congress must surely give to speculation as to whether that would be the time for him to visit Australia. Note: The 29th International Eucharistic Congress was held in Sydney in 1928.
