Illt PLIGHT Of NOtPENDENT SCHOOLS: Parties must act together

Papal honour for Polish Leader

By R. J. L. Will iams. "For too long the governments of this country have been able to educate a big section of the children in Australia on the cheap".—Senator V. C.Gair, D.L.P., speaking in the Senate on November 12, 1968.

THERE ARE SIGNS that the thinking of all major political parties on aid to independent schools is nearing agreement, and recent statements by party spokesmen on a Commonwealth level show that there is now a substantial area of common ground. IF THIS IS SO, the sooner education is lifted from the political arena and made a matter for concerted effort by Government and Opposition alike, the better. In the meantime, education suffers.
