fACt PROBLEMS JOHN A. GREAVES reports from LONDON.

AN EXTRAORDINARY MEETING of the bishops of England and Wales has been called for September 17 to formulate a common policy on Pope Paul VI's encyclical on birth control, "Humanae Vitae." THE MEETING HAS BEEN CALLED BY JOHN CARDINAL HEENAN OF WESTMINSTER. Under his chairmanship, the 24 archbishops, bishops and auxiliary bishops will try to agree on a common policy intheir teaching on the encycl ical and its application to both priests and laity. It wi ll be strictly private. There will be no voting and there may be no statement afterwards. BUT IT IS BELIEVED THE CHURCH LEADERS WILL DISCUSS CAREFULLY THE DIFFERENT WAY PRIESTS ARE INTERPRETING AND ACTING ON THE ENCYCLICAL AND ALSO THE VARYING ATTITUDES OF SOME BISHOPS TOWARDS PRIESTS WHO HAVE OPPOSED THE ENCYCLICAL. The archdiocese of S outh wark, covering South London and the S .“tia-East corner of gland, has been exceptionally strict with its clergy so far, demanding total acceptanceof and obedience to th encycliCal. DEATH OF DEAN M. LYNCH THE Very Reverend Dean Michael Lynch, parish priest of Mul lewa, died in St. John of God Hospital, Geraldton, on September 13. He was 72.

The funeral took place at Geraldton on Monday last. The Cathedral was packed to overflowing for the Requiem, which was concelebrated by Bishop F. X. Thomas of Geraldton Bishop B. Gallagher of Port Pine, Bishop M. McKeon, Vicar Capitular of Perth, Monsignor E. Bryan, V.G., parish priest of Morawa, and Father K. F. Spain, parish priest of Dongara. Twenty-five other priests were present. gathered like the rest of the congregation from the dioceses of Geraldton, New Norcia. and Perth. Preaching the panegyric, Bishop Gallagher referred to Dean Lynch as a man of great faith, who was beloved by all his people, whom he knew intimately. Evidence that Bishop Gallagher's words were no empty phrases was to be seen in the number of people, men as well as women, who were w eeping. Dean Lynch was born in Ireland., but came to Western Australia in 1909 when his father, Mr. P. Lynch, bought a property at Mullewa. where Dean Lynch was to be parish priest from 1947 until his death. Leaving school, he returned to Ireland and later Rome to study for the priesthood, and was ordained in 1922. He returned to Australia and was appointed parish priest of Three Springs, scene of his schooldays. where be stayed for 18 years. May he rest in peace.
