DEATH OF PRIEST
CHURCH TEACHING UNCHANGED POPE PAUL VI has done what he said he w ould do and has acted in accordance with his conscience, as he said he would. Conscious of the mission of the Church to provide coherent teaching concerning the nature of marriage and the correct use of conjugal rights and the duties of husband and wife, Pope Paul confirmed and enlarged the study commission set up by Pope John XXIII in 1963. This commission did not excuse the Pontiff from making a searching examination of the whole question himself. In his statement of 1964 he said: "We say frankly that We do not so far see any adequate reason for considering the relevant norms of Pius XII to be superseded and therefore no longer obligatory; they should therefore be regarded as valid, at least as long as We do not consider Ourselves in conscience obliged to modify them." The latter section of this statement signified no more than Pope Paul's assurance that he would not close his eyes, ears or mind to any new evidence or argumentation which might make necessary some modification of a conviction which the Church held so firmly and he stated so clearly in June, 1964. He reaffirmed the teaching of Pius XII when the controversy first became public: enlarged a tor:mission to investigate and advise. In 1966 he stated that the Magiste rium of the Church was not in a state of doubt on the question. He said then that the conclusions of the study commission "cannot be considered definitive" and detlared that the norm until now taught by the Church "integra ted by the wise instructions of " Council demands faithful and generous observance."
