This Solemn Novena is conducted each year in preparation for the Patronal Feast of the Cathedral Church, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady. Novena devotions are conducted each evening from 7.30 to 8 p.m. and the general intentions this year will be: WORLD PEACE; SAFETY OF AUSTRALIA AS A CHRISTIAN NATION: VOCATIONS; CHRISTIAN UNITY. The closing ceremony of the Novena will include a Torchlight Procession around Victoria Square on Friday evening. December 8. The Novena devotions will be conducted each evening by Father D. Clifford, C.SS.R. Masses each day during the Novena will be at 6.45 am., 9 a.m. and 12.10 p.m.
YEAR OF FAITH ALL-NIGHT VIGIL .As in previous years, an All-Night
Vigil will be conducted at the Cath-
edral as part of the Solemn Novena. This year the vigil will be on Friday night, December 8, to Saturday morning, December 9. This is aimed at being a Diocesan Year of Faith in keeping with the wish of Our Holy Father for special cereMonies to celebrate the Year of Faith. Meditations "Presenting Christ to
us," as a means of revitalising our faith and trust in Him, will be the theme of the vigil. The following priests from throughout the Archdiocese, as well as the Cathedral staff, will lead the people in these meditations: Father Joachim O'Brien, O.F.M. Father J. McNamara, P.P. Father Justin Ives, C.P. Father R. Joseph's, S.M. Father J. Cleary, 0.S.Cam. Father D. Clifford, C.SS.R. The special intentions of the vigil will be: STRENGTHENING OF THE FAITH THROUGHOUT THE WORLD; WORLD PEACE; VOCATIONS.

The vigil will open with a Mass at 11 p.m. on Friday night and conclude with a concelebrated Mass at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. Confessions will be heard throughout the night and a break for refreshments will be made at 1 a.m. Arrangements will be made for a cup of tea to be provided, but people should bring their own food. A special invitation is extended to members of the clergy, religious and faithful, and especially to members of sodalities, Third Orders and all forms of the lay apostolate to take part in the vigil observance.
In his 'address, the Bishop commended the Christian Brothers in Highgate for their invaluable contribution to - both Church and State in the field of education in 'Western Australia. In welcoming Brother F. J. Levander, first Provincial of the newly formed Province of the Holy Spirit, and Brother W. G. Hall, Consultor to the Provincial, Bishop McKeon wished them God's blessing in their task. The Bishop thanked Mr. Chaney, representing the Federal Minister for Education and Science, Mr. Gorton„ for his work in pleading the cause of aid for independent schools. He concluded his addi:ess by congratulating the boys and Brothers of Highgate on the addition of the science laboratories to the school.
