BISHOP RYAN RETIRES: ADELAIDE PRIEST NEW BISHOP
FATHER LEONARD FAULKNER (pictured) has been appointed by Pope Paul VI as the new Bishop of Townsvine, Queensland.
He replaces Bishop Hugh Ryan, who has resigned his See at the age of 79. Bishop Ryan was consecrated at Bendigo on October 18, 1938. The Bishop-Elect, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Faulkner, of Prospect. South Australia, was born in Prospect in 1926. He is the eldest of ten children. Ordained in Rome on January 1, 1950, he was the first student to be ordained from St. Francis X avier's Seminary, Magill, South Australia, and is the first bishop to come from the seminary. Other colleges attended by the Bishop-Elect were Corpus Christi College, Weribee. and Propaganda College, Rome. He was appointed the administrator of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide, in 1957, and held the post until the end of last year. He then became chaplain to the Lay Apostolate Liaison Committee and diocesan promoter of vocations. He has twice been diocesan Y.C.W. chaplain, a position he held at the time of his appointment. In all, he was chaplain for periods adding up to ten years. No plans are announced .about his consecration at this stage. Two of his brothers are Christian Brother:. They are Brother P. A. Faulkner, a science teacher at St. Bernard's College. West Essendon, Victoria, . and Brother G. G. Faulkner, at present in AdelaAe. Brother G. G. Faulkner is just back from Rome where he did a course in theology and mripture. He has been detailed to India, but has not been able to get a visa and is unsure where his -next posting will be.
