NEED TO KNOW NATURE Zambia's Bishop Says Of CHURCH
Thanks
R
EFERRING TO THE CHURCH AS THE "SACRAMENT" OR SACRED SIGN OF CHRIST'S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD, ROPE PAUL VI LAMENTED THE FACT THAT "SO MANY PEOPLE REGARD THE CHURCH AS AN OBSTACLE, ALMOST AN IMPEDIMENT, NOT TO SAY AN OUTRIGHT DEFORMATION OF CHRIST." How is it possible, he asked at his weekly general audience for the Church not to "demonstrate its sacramental power, its beauty „its prerogative of the presence of Christ? The answer to this would be a long one. Even the Lord Himself was not recognisesd by everyone. "But we can be content with making two points: . "First, the Church appears obscure and not unlike merely human institutions to someone who looks from the outside, to someone who does not know it or does not wish to recognise the Church's transcendent secret. "Second, the Church at some times and in seine of its aspects is not beautiful, is not a splendid thing, does not make itself significant and audible because its sons are not exemplary and do not live as true Christians.
RESPONSIBILITY
Bishop Clement of Zambia with Mission Director Father W. Foley.
"pLEASE convey to all the other girls and boys whom I cannot see personally my deep appreciation and thanks for their help in training students for the priesthood in Zambia and Malawi." This was the wish expressed by Bishop Clement Chabukasansha of Kasama, Zambia, in talking last week to students from Trinity College and Our Lady's College during a brief stop-over of 48 hours in Perth. The White Fathers had brought the Church to Zambia (Northern Rhodesia) only 60 years ago and had immediate success. He himself was baptised in 1929 at the ge of 12 years and later hood studied for the priest-
