POPE ORDERS PEACE PRAYER

DOPE PAUL has ordered the insertion of an invocation for peace into the Prayer of the Faithful in all Masses during the remainder of Lent.

A SPOKESMAN for Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani confirmed that Pope Paul VI has named the 75-year-old leader of the Roman Curia as president of a commission on family and population problems.

The invocation, published on March 1 by decree of the Congregation of Rites, asks that "just peace and true concord be realised among peoples violently afflicted by war or civil discord."

The spokesman said that the commission is a new one which is much smaller than the commission on birth control problems set up by the Pope in mid-1964. The Pope announced in a speech on February 12 that he was reorganising the old commission to give it "greater authority" and to "hasten" its work. Cardinal Ottaviani, for 30 years a top official of the Congregation of the Holy Office, has won a reputation as an exponent of theological orthodoxy.

Church For Ukrainians Bishop Ivan Prasko, the Ukrainian Apostolic Exarch in Australia, was in Perth last weekend to open the new Ukrainian Catholic War Memorial Church of St. John the Baptist at Maylands. In the picture at left, Bishop Prasko ( centre) is pictured concelebrating the first Byzantine Rite Mass in the new church. The consecration and opening service which was performed in the traditional Ukrainian custom, lasted nearly four hours. Guests and hundreds of the 1,100 Ukrainian Catholics in W.A., crammed into the church. Many who could not get seats stood for the entire service.
