DRAMATIC PEACE PLEA

In the strongest plea of his Pontificate Pope Paul has called on world leaders to put a stop to the "fresh flames of discord" from errupting in-

to a major war while "there is still time." He asked for "frank, honest, loyal negotiations" to bring about peace and described the Vietnam war as a "bloody and ruinous struggle" which caused his heart to suffer bitterly. The horror envisaged in his impassioned speech overshadowed any joyousness surrounding the Feast of St. John the Baptist, his nameday.
