MARXIST - CHRISTIAN MEETING MARRED BY SUDDEN ABSENCES

Salzburg, Austria: The twin mysteries of the missing cardinal and the missing communists hovered like a cloud over the four-day dialogue between Christians and Marxists here.

Marxist scholars from four Iron Curtain countries, who had been scheduled to come, refused to attend the study session on collaboration and ideological co-existence between Christians and atheists. Some observers here attributed their refusal to false reports that the c onference was being sponsored by the Vatican's new Secretariat for Noa-Believers. Also absent was Franziskus Cardinal Koenig of Vienna, president of the secretariat, who sent word at the last minute that he would not attend. But the secretary of the secretariat, Father Vincenzo Miano, S.D.B., was among the 230 Marxist theorists and Christian theologians from East and West who met here under the auspices of the Paulus Society.

Misgivings Expressed

He had actively encouraged Father Kellner's effort to organise this year's debate on religion and had said he would bring a three-part Polish delegation of Marxists, government - favoured Catholics of the Pax group and Catholics who fully support Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, the Polish Primate, who has been an outspoken critic of the government.

He added that because the Cardinal is head of the new Secretariat for NonBelievers, his presence might have seemed to give the Vatican's approval to the meeting. Father Kellner stressed that the Christian-Marxist dialogue got off to a good start, adding that "this dialogue is not political, rather it is a matter of science, humanity and respect for the human mind." Church in the modern world, where the question of married love is considered. He is a German moral theologian w h o teaches in Rome. He predicted that Pope Paul VI will "say something to direct the conciences of people" after the papal commission finishes its study of family questions. But in the meantime, he added, "no one should anticipate what the solution will be." He did not speculate as to when the Pope would speak. He said the norms set forth by Pope Pius XII in 1958, condemning the use of anovulant pills for contraceptive p u r poses, must be "observed in a reasonable, not rigoristic manner." LARGE FAMILY IDEAL Father Haering remarked that the large family is an ideal, if all conditions are favourable — but the responsibility for making the decision rests not with a government or a confessor, but with each individual couple. He said he sees no conflict between the work of the papal commission and that of the Ecumenical Council sub - commission dealing with the schema on the Church in the world. "In my opinion," he said, "the Council will give only great directions for the future. It would be unfortunate if the Council entered into the casuistic questions of our year, which may no longer be important in a few years." He said all currents of theological opinion are represented on the papal commission and it is unfair to suggest that only con-

servative thought has a voice there. Outlining a "most probable" schedule for the Council's fourth session, which opens on September 14, he predicted that three or four days will be spent discussing the declaration on religious liberty; next will follow two or more weeks on the Church in the modern world; then will come discussions of completely revised documents on the missions and the priesthood. He stated flatly that there will be no further. discussion on the declaration on Catholic-Jewish relations, despite recent newspaper reports to the contrary. Instead, he said, there simply will be a vote. The fourth and last session will probably end before Christmas. but its work-load could carry it over beyond the Christmas holidays, he said.

Schemas Reviewed

VATICAN CITY: THE commission for the co-ordination of the E cumenical Council's fourth and last session met in Rome on May 11 and 12. The commission's task was to review the revisions of the various schemas being made by individual c ommissions. The revised schemas will then be sent to Pope Paul for approval and will be presented to the Fathers when the Council opens on September 14. The commission is headed by Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, Papal Secretary of State.
