HIS FIRST TRIP EAST
NEW CHANGES WHICH INCLUDE THE OMISSION OF PSALM 42 AT THE BEGINNING OF MASS AND OF THE LAST GOSPEL WILL GO INTO EFFECT IN THE ARCHDIOCESE ON MARCH 7, THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT. The Bishops and priests of the Archdiocese met last Friday morning to discuss the new changes.
After the conference the following changes were issued.
The changes, which were made by the instruction of the Vatican Liturgy Commission, stress the community nature of Christian worship and take full advantage of the liturgy's educational and formative possibilities. Included in the changes below are some New Rites to be observed in the celebration of Holy Mass which have just been announced. In the introduction to the "Instruction for the Proper Implementation, of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy," it is read: "The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy is deservedly counted among the first fruits of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council since it governs the most excellent part of the Church's activity. It will bear more.abundant fruit the more profoundly the pastors and faithful of Christ perceive its genuine spirit and put it into practice with goodwill. "Bishops and their assistants in the priesthood should relate their entire ministry ever more closely to the liturgy. In this way the faithful may derive the livine life in abundance from the perfect participation in the Sacred Celebrations md, made the ferment of Christ and the ;alt of the earth, will proclaim the divine life and communicate it to others." In article 19 the instruction states: "Pastors of souls shall strive diligently and patiently to carry out the command of the constitution concerning the liturgical formation of the faithful and their active participation, both internal and external, according to their age and condition, their way of life and standard of religious culture." Article 22 of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy states that "the regulation of the Sacred Liturgy depends solely on the authority of the Church, that is, on the Apostolic See, and as laws may determine, on the bishop. -Therefore, no person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the Liturgy on his own authority." In addition to the Liturgical changes already in operation, the remaining provisions of the "Instruction for the Proper Implementation of the Constitution .on the Sacred Liturgy" will be officially introduced on the first Sunday of Lent, March 7. As from that date the following changes are to be implemented and observed uniformly in every parish. LOW MASS * Psalm 42 is to be omitted from prayers at the foot of the altar in ALL Masses—Latin and English. The priest begins Mass with the Sign of the Cross: ÷ In the name of the Father, and of the 'Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. I will go to the altar of God. R. To God who has gladdened me from childhood days. (Omit Psalm 42.) P. Our help is in the name of the Lord. R. Who made heaven and earth. Priest: Confiteor . . • People: May the almighty God, etc. Priest: Amen . . . People: Confiteor. Versicles and responses and "Let us pray" before the "Aufer a Nobis" are all in English.
* The opening words "Glory be to God on high" of the Gloria and"I believe in one God" of the Nicene Creed, must always be said by the priest alone. * After saying "Oremus" — "Let us pray," the celebrant pauses a while before extending his hands and 'saying the Collect. This New Rite is also to be observed before saying the Post - Communion Prayer. * In Masses celebrated with the people, the Lessons, Epistle and Gospel shall be read facing the people, either from the altar, from the ambo, or near the edge of the sanctuary area. * A qualified lector may read the Lessons and Epistle—always at the ambo or at the edge of the sanctuary area. The celebrant sits and listens. * The Gospel may be read by a Deacon or by a second priest, who says the "Munda cor meum" kneeling, seeks the blessing from the celebrant, and at the end presents the Book of Gospels for the celebrant to kiss. The celebrant stands at the sedilia when giving the blessing and during the reading of the Gospel. * If the celebrant reads the Gospel— after Lessons, Epistle, Gradual, etc., he goes to the lowest step of the altar, bows, recites the "Muda cor meum," after which he returns to the ambo and proclaims the Gospel. * The Prayer of the Faithful is to be recited or sung litanically before the Offertory after the words "Let us pray" or "Oremus" before the Offertory verse, on Sundays and Holy Days or other special occasions. The celebrant shall direct the prayer from the altar, from the ambo, or from the edge of -the sanctuary, but facing the people (New Rite). [ The authorised text of the Prayer of the Faithful is printed on Page Three and the faithful are asked to cut it out and take it with them to Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.] * The celebrant remains in the centre while preparing wine and water in the chalice (New Rite). * The prayer over the offerings, i.e. the Secret Prayer, shall always be said aloud, in Latin at Latin Masses, in English at English Masses, but always without "Oremus" or "Let us pray" (English ending . . . for ever and ever. R. Amen; Latin ending . . . per omnia, etc.). * No bell is prescribed for the Sanctus (New Rite). * The Doxology at the end of the Canon from the words "Per Ipsum" up to and including "per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen," shall be said aloud always in Latin. Throughout the entire Doxology the celebrant lifts up the Chalice and Host for the little elevation, omitting the Signs of the Cross, and at the end genuflects only after the response Amen is given by the people.

but without directly referring to that particular outflaring of violence. The Holy Father said: "We must speak of peace, because still again humanity must tremble for the fate of peace. Still again menacing clouds overshadow noble nations, already so greatly tried, aggravating the painful situation in which they find themselves and multiplying sufferings and mourning, "We, the representative on, earth of the Prince of Peace, called to carry out our mission in days in which the world, after a promising abatement of conflicts, seems to desire to turn again to discords and conflicts, address ourself to all interested men. in whatever part of the world they may be, that the:. may save innocent people from new trials and ne-,v tears. * The Embolism, Libera Nos, etc., after the Pater Noster, shall aways be said aloud, in English in English Masses and in Latin in Latin Masses. * The Missal is not changed after Communion.
