MARCH TO PROTEST CONGRESS

B OMBAY — A massive protest demonstration against the 38th International Eucharistic Congress, to be held here from Nov. 28 to Dec. 6 has been planned for Nov. 18 by a militant Hindu organisation.

The demonstration organised by Sabha, Hindu name of the association, will take place in Maharashtra State, which includes Bombay. In a resolution adopted at a public meeting on October 25, a Sabha committee called on the State's people to observe November 18 as "antiEucharistic Congress Day." The militant Hindu organisation termed the congress "a well-planned offensive to convert the Indian population to Christianity." Sabha expressed concern over a display of Roman strength in India at this time in view of "the atholic C mischievous political role being played by the Roman Catholic Church in South Vietnam and the encouragement given by it to the Naga rebels on India's eastern borders."

Propaganda Eucharistic Congress officials here declined to comment on this latest move of militant Hindus, which up to now has been confined to word-of-mouth propaganda and to distributing anti-Catholic leaflets. Congress circles here said they had nothing to add to what Valerian Cardinal Gracias of Bombay said at a recent news conference: "Believe me, we have no sinister intentions." Though the planned demonstration is permissible under India's constitution, police have been alerted to keep the demonstration from becoming violent. Two prelates, Monsignor Paul Marcinkus of Chicago, an official of the Papal Secretariat of State, who has been sent to prepare the arrangements for the Pope's trip to Bombay, and Father Pasquale Macchi, the Pope's private secretary, arrived here to discuss the Pope's programme.
