MASS CHANGES AUTHORISED BY POPE PAUL By FATHER FREDERICK R. McMANUS

The striking new in the Mass hanges c the instrucby mode tion of the Vatican Liturgy Commission aim at stressing the c ommunity nature of Christian worship and taking full advantage of the liturgy's educational or formative possibilities.

the new changes enacted by the postWHILE conciliar liturgy commission become mandatory and must be observed as of next March 7, the first day of Lent, national bishops' conferences could get permission to put them into effect earlier, according to Father McManus. He told a meeting of the U.S. press panel that a national body of bishops would only have to apply to the commission for the permission to put all of the changes into effect prior to the effective date. Father McManus noted in his explanation to journalists that the instruction of the commission involves only changes which can be made easily. without having to alter the existing liturgical books to a major extent. He said, however, that in the future there are to be a number of structural changes which will be much more radical in restoring the purity of the celebration of the Eucharist.

The new changes, which go into effect on March 7, 1965, the first Sunday of Lent, must be regarded as a 'preliminary step in the overall liturgical reform decreed last December by USE WITH CONGREGATION the Second Vatican Council. Father McManus noted that while the instruction In the Constitution on is the work of the new liturgy commission, it was the Liturgy the Council issued by the Congregation of Rites after review by gave broad mandates for r eforms to be worked out that body. in detail by a commission The priest pointed out that the instruction prodrawn from all over the vides for use of the vernacular in the Mass whenw orld. Simplicity Will Be Keynote Of Papal Visit To Bombay

VATICAN CITY: THE HOLY FATHER WILL CONSECRATE FIVE BISHOPS FROM FIVE CONTINENTS ON DECEMBER 3 WHILE ATTENDING THE INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS IN INDIA. Coadjutor Arch bishop Angelo 'Fernandes of Delhi told the U.S. bishops' press panel that the Pope "will spend three days at least iii Bombay during which he will consecrate five bishops from five continents and on another occasion he will meet thhe poor." After the panel discussions, Archbishop Fernandes somewhat qualified the period of the Pope's visit, indicating that it may not be a .full 72-hour stay in India, but may also include travel time from Rome to India and back. The names of the new bishops have not been reArchbishop leased and Fernandes said the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith was still selecting candidates when Valerian Cardinal Gracias of Bombay left Rome two weeks ago. SAID THE ROSARY A rch bishop Fernandes said the Pope spoke to Cardinal Gracias two weeks ago to inform him of his decision. Archbishop Fernandes said the cardinal told him that while he waited in the antechamber for his audience he said 15 decades of the Rosary, "hoping for the best" and to have the grace of acceptance if the Pope decided not to go. When His Holiness announced his decision, Cardinal Gracias said he knelt and kissed the papal ring sayin2- only, "Thank God."
