In a plea for peace among nations, Pope Paul VI denounced nationalistic pride, prestige politics, the armaments race, and social and economic antagonisms as symptoms of a "regrowth of divisions and oppositions among peoples." The Pope called on all nations to remember that "security rests on an effort towards mutual understanding, on the generosity of loyal mutual trust, on a spirit of collaboration for common advantage, and on aid. particularly to developing countries" more than on "the hypothesis of a lawful and collective use of armed f orce." "IN A WORD," HE SAID, "IT RESTS ON LOVE." Speaking at his weekly general audience at Castelgandolfo, the Pope noted he was departing from his "usual familiar and spiritual colloquy" to discuss "some serious thoughts caused by two stimulating motives." The first, he said, were the 50th anniversary of World War I and the 25th anniversary of World War II. The second, he stated, were the "acute disagreements. already stained with blood and pregnant with menacing omens, existing today among various countries."

THE Young Church of Australia, in the persons of Catholic teenagers and young adults, had set itself on the path of renewal with the Second Vatican Council through the 19th annual National Council of Young Christian Workers Movement, said the Movement's Episcopal Chairman, Bishop Francis Rush, last week. Bishop Rush, of Rockhampton, was speaking after the Y.C.W. Council in Lismore, N.S.W., which he attended as the representative of the Australian Bishops' Conference. The Y.C.W. Movement is the bishop's own youth movement in most Australian dioceses. "These young men and women, representing Australian Catholic youth in an organised and effective way, have set an example of what the Vatican Coun-

They have done this not only in terms of theory but in practical measures decided after a realistic examination of Australia today." RENEWAL UNDER WAY Bishop Rush said that the renewal of the Church in Australia is not a thing of tomorrow. "In these young people," he said, "the renewal of Catholics and the Catholic community is already under way in the spirit of the Council." During its sessions, the Y.C.W. Council heard detailed surveys of youth treatment, reactions and trends from all Australian States over the past year. Particular attention was paid to youth at work, following six months of enquiries into the subject. In a radical self-examination of Y.C.W. effectiveness as a movement of the delegates and Church, chaplains stated that there is a need to involve more in youth uncommitted Y.C.W.-sponsored projects. To increase initiative in youth formation, the Council voted a major decentralisation of the Movement's direction.
