FAITH PROFESSED
It is expected that all those parts of public Low Mass said aloud, with the exception of the Preface, will be said in English in the Perth Archdiocese from the first Sunday of August (Aug. 2). This date has been chosen for the Archdiocese to al low priests and people to obtain suppl ies of "The Engl ish Text for Use of the People at Mass" and while other l iturgical books are procured and to enable careful preparation for this historic changeover to be made. This booklet will be distributed through the parishes and schools as soon as supplies are obtained.
This extensive use of English is a result of the Conference of Australia's Bishops held in Sydney last week when they considered the decisions which the Holy See had approved for them in their application in accordance with the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy. The application of these approved decrees is to be made in each diocese as and when the local Ordinary sees fit. The following are the 16 approved decisions released by the Bishops: 1.—English may be used in Masses celebrated with the people in all parts of the Mass said in a loud voice, except the Preface. 2.—English may be, used in the liturgical function of Good Friday and in the Easter Vjgil. 3.—English may be used in the administration of the Sacraments and Sacramentals contained either in the Roman Ritual or the Roman Missal. 4.—English may be used in the allocutions of the Bishop at the beginning of the Ordination to the Priesthood. 5.—For scriptural readings, the English versions known as Douay, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and Knox may be used. 6.—For the parts which belong to the Ordinary of the Mass the English translation prepared by the Bishops of Australia is to be used as the only version approved for Australia. 7.—The English translations of the Proper of the Roman Missal found in the Missals entitled Roman Missal, Layman's Missal and St. Joseph Missal are approved. 8.—For the administration of the Sacraments and Sacramentals found in the Roman Ritual the English translation edited by the Archbishop of Birmingham is approved. 9.—For the allocutions of the Bishop at the beginning of the Ordination to the Priesthood the translation of A. Bisupek is approved. 10.—For the recitation of the Divine Office in English by those who have r eceived t h e permisison, the necessary English translation of the Roman Breviary published by The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, U.S.A., is approved. OTHER LANGUAGES 11.—The liturgical functions celebrated with the people of a language other than English, with the con-
sent of the local Bishop and within the limits mentioned above for English. the language of the people may be used, but according to a translation duly approved by a competent ecclesiastical authority of that language. 12.—In all Masses, both Low and Sung, the postures of standing, sitting and kneeling prescribed by the Bishops are to be followed by the people. 13.—Provision is to be made so that the people will know also in Latin the parts of the Ordinary of the Mass pertaining to them. 14.—Melodies of the liturgical texts which may be sung must be approved by the Bishops of Australia. 15.—Each Bishop will determine how the above decisions are to be implemented in his Diocese and issue appropriate instructions. 16.—The introduction of English into Low Mass may begin as from the first Sunday of July, 1964. The parts of the Mass said aloud by the priest at present are the introductory prayers, the Introit, the Kyrie, Gloria, Collect, Epistle, Gradual, Alleluia. Gospel, Creed Offertory Prayer, Preface (not included), Sanctus, Pater Noster, Agnus Dei. prayers before People's Communion. Communion and Post -Communion Prayers. all greetings. acclamations and dialogue. eg. Dominus Vobiscum. Blessing and Orate Frat res. The new booklet will clearly explain what is to be said by priest and people either singly or all together. The tenor of approvals given indicates that the majority of public Masses in the future will be in the form of 'Dialogue Masses.' A conference of the clergy will be held on July 1 to study and discuss these new decisions.
