SENATOR SAYS 200 SEEK DETAILS Of GOVERNMENT AID The Minister in charge of Commonwealth activities in education and research, Senator Gorton, has announced that nearly 200 nonGovernment schools had already shown interest in the Governments plan to help provide science facilities in Australian schools. QUESTIONNAIRES ARE BEING SENT TO SCHOOLS WHICH HAVE SHOWN AN, INTEREST IN THE SCHEME. Senator Gorton said that the needs of all schools registering would be carefully examined and those who were to be helped in the current financial year would be chosen as soon as possible. He also advised those schools which had not yet written to him to do so without delay. A committee of six to advise the Government on standards for laboratories and equipment under the scheme has been announced by 'Senator Gorton. They are: MR. L. C. ROBSON, chairman, a former headmaster at Sydney Church of England Boys' Grammar School; MR. E. D. GARDINER, a science master at Melbourne Church of England Boys' Grammar School; THE REV. BROTHER DR. V. C. McKENNA, science master at Aquinas College, Manning, W.A.; PROFESSOR R. SELBY-SMITH, who is about to take up a position as a Professor of Education at Monash University; PROFESSOR H. C. Senator Gorton said the committee would advise the Government on the standards to be recognised by the Commonwealth in helping to construct and equip science teaching laboratories. The committee could also be called upon to advise him on requests for assistance from individual schools. It would also serve as an expert body to which schools developing proposals for improving their science teaching could look for advice. "We hope to begin the process of selecting schools on the basis of completed questionnaires received by April 21," said Senator Gorton. "Only those schools which have received and returned questionnaires by that date can be sure of being considered for assistance in the first financial year of the scheme."

Pope's Easter Message VATICAN CITY: Pope Paul VI, addressing his Easter message to unbelievers as well as believers, urged all to ponder the "cosmic importance" of Christ's Resurrection. After celebrating outdoor Mass in front of St. Peter's Basilica before a crowd overflowing the great piazza, Pope Paul mounted the basilica's high central balcony to deliver his impassioned appeal. "Whatever be the position which you who hear these words have adopted regarding religion, to all of you, from this summit to which the Christian Easter has raised us, we extend the intation to welcome the message of light which c omes to the world through

the Resurrection of Christ." Christ's Resurrection is "at the same time a motive for believing in Him and an object of that very belief," he said. It is "the source of the meaning of the human drama, the solution of the problem of evil, the origin of a new form of life to which we give the name Christianity." The Pope begged those who have no religion or who are opposed to it to re-examine their views. "Perhaps some of you have inexact or more repugnant concepts of religion," he said. "Perhaps your idea of faith is erroneous—that it offends intelligence, shackles progress, or humiliates man, bringing sadness to his life,"

Diamond Jubilee Of Nun

SOME OF THE YOUNGSTERS ENJOYING THE CELEBRATIONS.

LAST MONDAY, APRIL 6, HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP PRESIDED AT A SOLEMN HIGH MASS TO CELEBRATE THE DIAMOND JUBILEE OF THE RELIGIOUS PROFESSION OF SISTER M. GERARD (RYAN) AS A ST. JOHN OF GOD NUN. Sister Gerard's jubilee occurred on March 25, but as this fell during Holy Week it was celebrated on April 6. A large number of clergy and relatives and friends, including her sister Mrs. Lamont and brother Mr. James Ryan. attended the Mass, which was celebrated by Monsignor A. Langmead. The deacon was Father J. O'Brien and sub-deacon was Father E. McKenna. Father Magill, C.SS.R., preached the occasional sermon. Sister Gerard was born in Kilmore, Victoria, 83 years ago. At the age of 18 she came to Kalgoorlie to attend the wedding of her sister, Mrs. O'Reilly, intending to return after a brief holiday. However, she came in contact with the pioneer community of the Sisters of St. John of God who had come to the Goldfields three years earlier. Inspired by their lives of unselfish devotedness to the children in the schools and their untiring and zealous care of the fever-stricken miners, she asked to be admitted to the Institute. Obedience to God's call was to replace her will to return to her home in Victoria. After being accepted by the Provincial House in Subiaco, she passed faithfully through her five years of probation and was professed on the feast of the Annunciation in 1904. During her 60 years of religious life,

Sister Gerard's work for God has been maintained in the supervision of various kitchens and sewing rooms in Subiaco, Kalgoorlie and Ballarat. She also endeared herself to the students at St. Charles' Seminary where she was cook for a number of years. Sister's spirit of prayer and devotion to the Mass has characterised her days, and her habit of soliciting prayers for sinners will long be remembered and emulated in her communities.
