The name "John" chosen by the then Cardinal Roncalli when he became Pope was also the name of his father, his native parish church and his cathedral. The name "John" has beer) chosen by popes more than any other name, but was not selected for more than 600 years prior to Pope John choosing the name. The late Holy Father said: "There have been 22 legitimate popes called John. Nearly all of them had short pontificates. We have decided to seek refuge from our own insignificance under the protection of this great line of Roman popes." 1 881 November
