Tangible proof of a very generous mission spirit is seen in this report of the Pontifical Mission Aid Societies for 1962.

The priests, religious-teachers and laity of the Archdiocese have all had their part in this great and ever increasing response to the Hof Father's appeal for missionary co-operation. Over the last ten years Rev W FOLEY, Director of Missions

there has been a fourfold in-. crease in the Archdiocese of subscriptions to the Propagation of the Faith and Holy Childhood. From a total of £ 6,760 in 1952, the Societies this year collected £26,345. This is an increase of £3,771 over the gross total last year. Both the parishes and the schools have shared in this effort with the Directors through the years, and truly merit our sinccre thanks. Well done! a special word of thanks on behalf of the children in mission-lands that they have helped in their daily sacrifices— £1,900/19/0 of this year's increase is directly due to their effort. The sacrifices of the classroom convince me of an ever-present awareness in the children's minds of missionary needs and, what is more important, a ready remembrance in their daily prayers.

NEW POSTS FOR FRANCISCANS At the Provincial Chapter of the Australian-New Zealand Franciscan Province, the following were

I elected to the governing body of the Province:

PROVINCIAL—Very Rev. Father Ambrose Ryan. 0.F.M., S.T.D. CUSTOS— Very Rev. Father Sebastian Day, 0.F.M.. M.A.. Ph.D. DEFINITORS —Rev. Father Thomas Pearson, 0.F.M.; Rev. Father Christopher Goulding, 0.F.M., B.A., Dip. Ed. (Oxon.); Rev. Father Aquinas Howell, 0.F.111.; Rev. Father Campion Murray, 0.F.M., S.T.D.

. Finally, I am glad to note an increase in response to the call for missionary service. Not only are young Australian men and women joining the various missionary congregations as Christ's dedicated ones, but many more, in different family circumstances, have found it possible to give some years of service in a lay capacity. Their skills in the various trades and professions have become tremendously important on the mission-field. I would be glad to assist any such persons in their enquiries for lay missionary work in our own Kimberleys or overseas, especially New Guinea. All in all, a good year for Christ's missionaries has now concluded. The financial statement reflects the spirit and prayer that abounds. My thanks to all for their co-operation with this office. I trust that this new year will bring a further increase of effort for this vital and urgent apostolate. • MISSION LIST, Page 15.

Diplomas For Lay Catechists His Grace the Archbishop this week gave approval to a new development in Catholic Education and lay co-operation here.

A Lay Catechist Diploma is to be awarded to trained personnel in the Perth Archdiocese in 1963. This diploma will be given to lay people engaged in the religious training of Catholic children deprived of Catholic education in Church schools. A training course for the diploma will commence at Our Lady's College, Victoria Square, on Monday evening. March 4, at 7.30 p.m. Trainee c atechists will participate in a ten -week series of discussions and practical work Which will be held once a week on Monday evenings. The course will be completed by the awarding of the Lay Catechist's Diploma. 140 AT PRESENT A bout one hundred and f orty lay are already people engaged in r c:igion to the teaching of Who are Catholic children forced to attend State schools. Some visit the school during allotted every the half-hour week to what

is called special religious instruction. Others teach in weekend and supplementary classes. All of these will take the diploma course, and it is expected that their numbers will be increased by new recruits to the apostolic field of teaching religion A group of young professional men and women from the medical and legal worlds, has already enrolled for the course and will take the special religion period in State schools in 1963. The course, or a similar one, will also be available for Catholic university students. M ISSION CEREMONY A familiar and impressive ceremony of the Church in France. Germany and elsewhere today is the solemn "mission," or sending of laycatechists to teach religion in the name of their bishops. These catechists are now making a splendid contribution to Catholic education. Some of the finest religion

text-books available today for children have been produced by the joint efforts of priests, brothers, nuns and lay-catechists.

At the same time, the Pope received other gifts, including a gold bell from the Chamber of Commerce. Indtistry and Agriculture. The bell bears an image of the Good Shepherd and a Christian monogram, supported by the figures of two angels.

It is the practice of the Church to award catechists' diplomas throughout the Catholic world to all who can meet the course requirements for such an award. The diploma course in Perth will be under the direction of Father J. Nestor of the Office.

Of the ecumenical council, he said that future generations will look back with admiration at the work being done by the c Fathers on "What is really. fundamental in life."

Catholic Education

Lay people who would like to take a real and active part in the religious education of children are invited to enrol with Father J.
