BLIND CHRISTIAN BROTHER FOR PERTH CONFERENCE

OVER VICTORIAN REFUSAL The Parents and Friends' Federation, Victoria, has arranged a special meeting in Richmond Town Hall for Mondoy, November 13. This special meeting followed the publication in Melbourne's daily papers of the Victorian State Government's refusal to allocate £2,000,000 a year for the education of children attending non -government schools.

PRAYElli

ONE of the most interesting persons to attend the bi-annual conference of the National Council for the Blind to be held in Perth on November 13 and 14, will be Rev. Brother P. G. O'Neill, M.B.E., the President of the Villa Maria Society for the Blind. Rev. Bro. 0 Neill (pictured with children at St. Paul's), became totally blind in 1927 and he has devoted his life ever since to the care of the blind. Bro. O'Neill established the Villa Maria Hostel for the Blind at Prahran, Victoria, in 1938; the Villa Madonna Hospital for the Blind, Windsor, in 1948, and St. Paul's School for the Blind, Kew, in 1957.

demonstrations against its construcby tion Orthodox Greeks, Bishop Hyacinth Gad, Exarch of of

They were led by 16 Orthodox priests, some fully vested and carrying crucifixes, and sixwingeds banners (poles surmounted by wooden or metal devices signifying orders of angels).

Police Wire Ready The police hat.: arrived before them. After members of the procession sang a to listened hymn and speeches condemning government officials who had given licences for the construction of the Catholic church, the police told the demonstrators to return to their church. They refused. Violence broke out, the police swinging their clubs and some of the demonstrators swinging their banners and religious symbols. No serious injuries were reported, but a few arrests were made. All those arrested were later released. No reporters from any of the Athens newspapers were present at the demonstration. Newspaper accounts of the march put the number of demonstrators at 5,000.

Byzantine Catholics in Greece, has asked the assistance by prayer and donations of Catholics throughout the world. Although news of immi-

nent national elections crowded out much other news, the newspapers treated their readers to highly inaccurate explanations of Byzantine Rite Catholics. "The Uniates are neither Catholics nor Orthodox, and surely not Protestants," the daily Kathimerini stated. "They are for Rome what the EDA and the PAME are for the Greek Communist party, that is to say they are an ecclesiastical organisation at the service of Catholicism within the breast of Orthodoxy." The EDA and the FAME are camouflaged remnants of the outlawed Communist party in Greece. Kathimerini said that despite this, "it does not mean that Orthodoxy must combat the Uniates with sticks and stones. Orthodoxy does not need such weapons. The Orthodox faith is enough for Orthodoxy. We therefore believe that the improper events on Acharnon Street will not be repeated."

Madness 'vattcan City: Vatican Radio commented that Soviet Russia's "mad decision" to explode a super bomb despite worldwide appeals reveals the true face of communism. A Vatican 7:adio news commentary branded the Soviet action "morally politically, socially, economically and humanely blameworthy."

It noted the "cynical refusal" of Soviet authorities to heed the appeals and protests of the United Nations, individual governments and scientific institutes. "The thought of God, judge of every free and responsible human act and avenger of every individual and collective injustice, did not - prevent this mad decision, for communism does not believe in God," Vatican Radio said. "The supreme principle of human co -existence and brotherhood did not prevent it, for

communism preaches hatred and class struggle. Neither did the anxiety of millions of women and children, for the materialism and totalitarianism of communism does not recognise the value of the human person. "The explosion of the superbomb confirms the true face of communism . a face in which there is absolutely no light of love and which reflects only the tenseness of hatred. The only resource of hatred is fear and terror." .
