Rev. Bro. Douglas Berchmans Smith, who
taught in several States during his 33 years in the Christian Brothers Order, died recently at St. Vincent de Paul's Orphanage, South Melbourne. He was 56. Born at Perth. he was eduChristian by the Brothers here and he did his Strathfield at training (NSW Bro. Smith is survived by M. sisters: Mother two (Presentation Berchmans Convent, Claremont) and Sister M. Dorothea (Sister of St. Joseph of the Apparition, Fremantle). Congratulations Messages of congratulations have flooded into West Perth and Lesmurdie from well wishers and past pupils
of the three Sisters. Mother M. Philip was born in Nova Scotia and her father, Batholomew Shine was a teacher. The family finally settled in West Australia and the future Mother General of the Federated Sisters of Mercy of West Perth began her education at St. Brigid's. On completion of her secondary education she studied for and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at the University of W.A. Mother Philip spent 20 years of her religious life at Lesmurdie where she was superior for a time. She was elected Mother General of the Federated Sisters of Mercy of West Perth in 1956.

One of her sisters was already a member of the Sisters of Mercy though she had died before Sister Lawrence entered the community. Sister M. Lawrence is noted for her highly proficient art work and has taught this work at St. Brigid's along with general education. At the garden party for the

Brothers' Degrees Two Australian Christian Brothers returned Rome from recently where they had been studying at the Jesus for Magister Institute a Teaching Brothers, branch of the Pontifical Lateran University. ST. DISMAS, the "Good Thief, a mural (81t. a 13ft.) on the rear wall of the Chapel at the Iowa State Men's Reformatory, Animas', Iowa, is pictured. It was painted by Ernest Garthwaite, graduate student of art from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, with the help of reformatory inmates. It will be dedicated on Good Thief Sunday, October 8. Over 400 correctional institutions in the U.S. and Canada will celebrate the annual feast.
