Symbols Of Slavery And freedom Clash In Berlin

His Grace Asks

For Prayer In view of the critical sit-

uation which now threatens the peace of the world call on all people of good will to join in special prayers for a peaceful solution to the grave problems confronting mankind. At times such as this we must storm heaven with intercessory prayer, begging Almighty God to assist us, even though the actions of some might merit punishment rather than His blessing. So great can be the perversity of man that too few turn to God to give Him due service and honour. Those who do, therefore, must redouble their efforts of prayer and good works. urge you all to increase your attendance and fervour at the Sacrifice of the Mass; to beg the Mother of God, Queen of Peace through her Rosary to intercede on our behalf. These can be the weapons of the Church in the battle for peace and our confidence in them is as unshaken as ever. Let us not fail to use them. A late release from the Apostolic Delegation received as we go to press says that: on next Sunday, 10th September, at 5.30 p.m., His Holiness Pope John XXIII will celebrate Holy Mass for the peace of the world at the Apostolic Palace of Castelgandolfo. On this occasion His Holiness will deliver a special message to the Catholic world. The Holy See asks that Catholics everywhere should join with the Holy Father spiritually on this occasion, by means of suitable ceremonies if the circumstances make it opportune.

Again the -world is back in a situation where the opposing camps of the free

world and those dominated by Communism are actually glaring down each others' gun muzzles in a small section of Germany, miles away from the main defence of the country. The cynical rejection by Russia of the long drawn out Geneva Conference showed that there can be no doubt as to their intentions. The exploding of four atomic bombs in the atmosphere following on the slight decline of the Berlin tension only served notice on the Western world that the Russian leaders are determined to scare the West into what they hope would be hasty decisions and more retreats. mounts Public opinion high in places closer to the source of the trouble. who have come through the horror of a war are faced with another which they believe will be more horrible still. Even a minor action in Berlin could spark off a world conflict. We know that there are many imperfections, injustices and the like which detract from our present 'Western' way of life. Yet we hold in it also the means to steadily change these things towards a better world. In America a rage of shelter building is steadily mounting. Again and unfortunately with imperfections already apparent, such deals as snide business which produce inferior promomentary sold on ducts hysteria. The underlying thought however, is the sensible urge for preparedness which should be reflected in any country in the world to-

His Grace Most Rev. Redmond Prendiville, Archbishop of Perth,

Western Australia. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge receipt of the precious Spiritual Bouquet of prayer and good works which Your Grace, in the name of the schoolchildren of the Archdiocese of Perth, presented to His Holiness through the good offices of the Apostolic Delegation. The Holy Father bids me assure Your Grace that He is most appreciative and sincerely grateful for this munificent gift which represents the generous desire of so many of His children to be united in prayer and sacrifice with the Common Father. In these times of particular anxiety for peace, the Pontiff is consoled and strengthened to learn of such spiritual support from the little ones who have chosen to bridge almost immeasurable distances with their prayers. In giving expression to the Holy Father's thankfulness, I have the honour to convey to Your Grace, to the children of the Archdiocese of Perth and their teachers and loved ones, in pledge of abundant heavenly favours, the paternal Apostolic Blessing of His Holiness. With sentiments of cordial esteem and high regard, I am devotedly yours in Christ, s. A. DELL'AQUA. (Substitute)
