RUSSIA! SAYS PRIEST Father John Ryder, S.J., of the Russian Centre at Fordham University, New York, hos arrived in London with plans for secret missionaries to carry the Faith underground into the Soviet Union. The bearded 61 -year -old U.S. Jesuit said he is prepared to go into Russia as
the priests of Reformation times disguised and smuggled themselves into antiCatholic Britain to offer Mass, administer the Sacraments and seek converts, knowing they were facing almost certain capture and a terrible death. He said he believes hundreds of young men will volunteer for such a mission It once they hear of it. should not be more difficult than in 16 -century England, he went on. Although communists secret police might be more efficient than authorities of 16th -century Britain, Russia is far larger than England and contains vast areas where a man could live undetected by the
authorities for years.
Idea From Pius XI Father Ryder spoke in an interview given to the Catholic Times, British weekly. He said he had dedicated his life to the Russian mission when the plan was started by Pope Pius XI, 30 years ago. "It was then thought that within a year or two circumstances would be propitious," he added. "That moment has never come." But now, he said, he feels that the huge bureaucratic

system in the U.S.S.R. based on permits, identity cards and other papers has gone on for so long that facilities are to be found everywhere for obtaining such documents. "We do not want to go into Russia to find a glorious death," Father Ryder said. "But by ingenuity and care we want to live for years until we can satisfy the spiritual longings and needs of even a few of the Russian
people."
They Must Be Bored It is impossible to overestimate the boredom of the Russian people with materialism, he added. They are avid for ideas. They want the answer to fundamental questions. Though it is almost impossible to send literature into Russia, some books are getting through Fr. Ryder said, and they are very welcome. People copy them out in long hand and circulate manuscript copies, he added. Father Ryder said he believes the impact of all efforts to convert Russia so far would be as nothing compared with the inspiration that would be aroused if it were known that even one man from the West had gone into the Soviet Union risking his life for no other reason than to tell the people there about Christ.

New Secretary Of
State Appointed The Apostolic Delegation in North Sydney has announced that His Eminence, Amleto Cardinal Cicognani has been appointed Cardinal Secretary of State to His Holiness Pope John XXIII, in succession to the late Cardinal Tar-
dini. Cardinal Cicognani was born on February 24, 1883, in Brisighella, Italy, and was ordained priest in 1905. A brilliant student, by 1910 he had won doctorates in theology, philosophy and Canon Law. In this latter field particularly he became a recognised authority. For many years he worked in the various Roman Congregations, and especially in the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church, where he was Assessor. In 1933 he was appointed Apostolic Delegate to the United States and remained there until 1958. In those 25 years he saw the Church in the United States make great progress. The Catholic population of the country increased from 20,000,000 to 34,000,000 in that time. When the present Holy Father made him Cardinal in 1958 he r%urned to Rome, and shortly afterwards was appointed Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church. The Pope himself, personally, is in charge of this Congregation. Cardinal Amleto Cicognani is not the only member of His his family to rise to prominence in the Church. older brother, also a Cardinal, is now Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Rites.

Another Catholic M.P., Wing Cmdr. Robert Grant Ferris of the governing Con-
servative party, said that in his party it is difficult for Catholics to be accepted as parliamentary candidates. "I think the reason really is that the Established (Anglican) Church of England and the Conservative party have been very closely woven together and have had very much a common :nterest in everything in the past," he said. But, he said, the situation is changing. "Things which I have personally suffered from in the past will be largely relegated to history before very long," he added.
