THE ANTI-COMMUNIST . . . Must be the same if he is to be effective. Complacency that a few are fighting the evil is not enough to even check the success of Communism. Communism is a problem to the politician but even more so to the ordinary Christian who lives in the world they want to destroy.

"A Communist is living proof that sincerity is not enough" THESE were some of the statements made by visiting journalist Mr. Douglas Hyde last Sunday night. Mr. Hyde's appearance at the Subiaco City Hall was sponsored by the Graduate Division of the Newman Society and his address was received by a capacity audience. His Australian tour is sponsored by the Columban Fathers and the theme of his lectures is "Understanding Communists and Communism." A compelling speaker, and purpose. COMMUNIST LIFE Mr. Hyde recounted various experiences in his own life as a Communist. He showed how the members put the party above everything else and that most of the people who joined the party were young people with ideals or a spirit of rebellion. iv Once they joined the party that idealism or rebellion was concentrated and directed by the overall ambition of the party. It was not left alone to battle on its own, but was given a sense of direction

laid down for him to follow. 'A change of line' would cause no worry or lasting embarrasment. The text books of the world revolution had laid it down. Lenin was not out of date, he said. At the present time 40 volumes of his sayings were being prepared to guide the members of today's party just as they had guided the party in its infant stages. One of his sayings was that "Communists must use the unions as a transmission belt to get Communism to the masses."

Another:- "Reform is a stepping stone to revolution," not the change of evil things to something that is good, because good brings contentment. LEADERS Speaking of the training of leaders, Mr. Hyde pointed out that in Australia there were 5,000 Communists. Everyone of these was a

leader and the strength of Communism came from the fact that they concentrated on training these idealists or rebels into dedicated men and women. If they were successful in getting their dedicated Communists into key positions, to cover the weak spots of the enemy and have educated people to keep the idealism they would have more success than in earlier efforts. This would be the case in what is hoped (by the Communists) will be the next great depression which they consider will shrink AmeriOne consideration in ca. this, they consider, is that the world is fast losing a religion to hold to. Men without religion are more easily taken over by those with their sense of purpose. Speaking of some of the weakness in democracy, Mr. Hyde said that we have to be honest with ourselves and accept more discipline of ourselves in working against Communism. Speaking specifically to Catholics he said that for every Communist in Australia there were 80 adult Catholics. Yet the control of this minority was such as it was today. If people who were opposed to Communism woke up to

their responsibility and oppose Communism in unions and elsewhere, the Commu-

On Sunday last MR. DOUGLAS HYDE

was the guest of HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP at Victoria Square. Present also were HIS LORDSHIP BISHOP RAFFERTY and MONSIGNOR J. BOURKE. In the afternoon Mr. Hyde, who gave 20 years of his life to furthering Communism, gave a lecture to Religious on the subject of "Leadership."

nists would be outnumbered and outplayed. This was not the particular job of Catholics, but the duty of every Christian to a-hieve because Communism was bent on the total destruction of the Christian way of life. There were no rules in this game. You can only stop the spread of an evil faith by the spread of a better one. The next 10 to 15 years would tell the story of the battle said Mr. Hyde. We have to see Communism as a challenge and then we ha,. e to get to and do something about it.

TAKE CARE! It has been reported that some youngsters are attempting to "collect" mission boxes from homes. People who keep the card board money box for small mission donations in their homes are advised that there is no method of "home collection." It is not known whether anyone has "got away with it" as yet but it could easily happen.

Archbishop Speaks On "Role Of The Woman In Progress" Wednesday, May 24, His Grace the Archbishop opened the 23rd Annual Conference of the Catholic Women's League at the Catholic Centre. He urged the members to heed the appeal of the Holy Father for prayers for the forthcoming Vatican Council. They had, he was confident, participated in the Novena to the Holy Spirit before Pentecost in their parishes, but they should continue to pray for that intention every day. The Holy Father, in an Apostolic Letter on April 11 of this year, said that he had never ceased to pray for the intentions of the Council since he announced that it would be held. Speaking on the role of women in the world today, His Grace said that the influence of woman in the shaping of the nation is being more and more realised. Her influence must be exercised to ensure a proper balance between material and spiritual progress. Progress is movement limited to two directions-forward and upward. The genius of modern man is almost entirely preoccupied with progress forward, progress in the physical sciences-and in this respect the world is making frightening advances. The crying need of the hour is for woman to use her God-given talents to accelerate progress upward. Progress upward is on an inclined plane. It is the plane whereon the human character is formed. It is progress in taste, in manners, in the sense of reverence which strengthens virtue, "in hating that which is evil and cleaving to that which is good." On that inclined plane, unfortunately, we are making little if any progress at all. It is uphill work, slow and tedious. It is not labouring the obvious to say that the character of man is formed by the touch of woman. If woman is lacking in refinement, where shall man find good morals? It is woman who, under God, implants the seed of virtue in the human heart. In the Middle Ages, artists, seeking to convey the spiritual beauty of the Mother of God (the model of all Christian women) frequently painted her picture against a background of gold. Mary brought a golden light into the world. She emancipated woman from the serfdom of pre -Christian times. That is the office of all Christian women, to bring a golden light into the world. It has been said that woman is the last fortress of any people. If man fails, God punishes man; but if woman fails, God will punish the whole people. See report on Page Eight.
