Lay Missionaries CHURCH IN AUSTRALIA IS IN SAFE HANDS." With these words His Grace the Archbishop extended a warm welcome to 13 lay missionaries who arrived in Perth from Melbourne a week ago to take up duty in the Kimberleys. "THE
"The Church in Australia is in safe hands," said His Grace as he welcomed them, "when we find young men and women who are prepared to sacrifice everything to help those who are in most need of help. We are honoured to welcome you, not only to Perth but to the State of Western Aus-
tralia."
As they knelt to receive hill- blessing, he thanked them for their visit and wished them every blessing. happiness and success in their missionary work in the Kimberleys.
Many Talents One of the missionaries, Heather Milne, comes from Albany, W.A., Margaret Toohey hails from Wagga Wagga and the other 11 come from Melbourne. One young boy, Paul Van Soest, migrated from Holland to Melbourne three and a half years ago. Carmel Hodkinson, who came to work at the Pallottine Mission House at Riverton, has already done mission work at La Grange.
The party includes nurses, teachers, office workers, a telephone mechanic, an electrician and a printer. Their ages range from 18 to 35. One of the men, Bruce Dixon, 18, of Burwood, Victoria, was an apprentice printer who has abandoned, temporarily at least, a promising career to serve Christ on the missions.
Known In W.A. Margaret Wynne, of Melbourne, a teacher, has left her well -paid professional career to teach at the mission at Tardun. Accompanying her to Tardun are Billy Edwards and Marie Schin-
companies Margaret Toohey to the mission at Derby. It will be remembered that two W.A. girls, Margaret Collopy and Patricia Miller, and George and Mrs. Rykers, of Inglewood, worked at the Derby Mission last year. Our congratulations to George and his wife Jennie. whom God has blessed with a young son now six weeks old. George, who crimes from Holland, has two uncles missionary priests in the Congo. One has been there for the past 35 years and the other for 25 years. The four boys of the present contingent, Robert Mitchell, Bruce Dickson, Paul Van Soest and Bob Doyle, have gone to Wyndham to help in the completion of the new church and presbytery in that area, and later will help with the building of a new church at Dery. Incidentally, any qualified tradesmen who could sacrifice even a few monthswithout pay-to help in this work at Derby, please contact Monsignor McKeon at the Catholic Missions Office, Victoria Square, Perth. With His Grace the Arch bishop, we pray God to bless the work of this youthful band of lay missionaries.
