Personal Opinions And The Catholic Press What is our attitude to the "Catholic Press?" Does our local Archdiocesan paper mean anything at all to us? Do we think that it has a useful purpose in Catholic life? ,227,957W,M29S.Mite9S/4492J

Any person, calling himself 'Catholic' cannot dodge the above questions with just a shrug of bored indifference. The most ordinary of us hate to be "left behind" in following current events. That is why newspapers to record daily function events of important to one and all. It is worth our while to read newspapers, to keep in touch with international happenings so that we may be reasonably aware of the situations of the world at any given time. The Diocesan paper is a weekly publication, as -a rule. On Sundays, at all churches, any one may purchase a paper and will not he buys it with a motive of catching up on current events affecting the
papers to send to their relatives and friends to keep as a photographic memento of the ceremonies. Whatever the purpose of purchase is, surely a weekly religious paper is worth buying even out of curiosity. The printer of the paper, usually under the direct or indirect control of the local Ordinary would not go to all the trouble of assimilating news and publishing the paper just to pass the time away. Neither is the diocesan paper produced to satisfy the whims of any of the clergy,
though it seems to others, buy and read the diocesan paper because of (a) loyalty to the Catholic press, and (h) a genuine interest in the affairs of the Church, based on a deep love for
communication between the Universal Church and the individual Catholic person. Here the reader may study the ever -fluctuating attitudes of all nations towards One the Catholic Church. reads of persecution massacres, invasions, executions, false-judgments, imprisonments and tortures inflicted on the sons and daughters of Holy Mother Church. Many people, incredible of the "written word" in The Government is to be congratulated on its initiative in making this code available to all secondary school children. Secondary classes, containing children who will leave school, or enter vacation social life would be well advised to devote a number of periods to the consideration of this code' Perhaps more valuable still would be the use of the code in family discussions. One of the great problems of parents is the peaceful enforcement of discipline, without causing resentments born of the complaint: "everyone else is allowed to do this." This Code indicates that the young people themselves recognise the need of the support of reasonable standards, and that these standards are in fact widely held
that all expressions of af-
fection, even this one, have tendency to "chain -reaction," which leads young people further than they would, in prior reflection, want to go. Not to say this is to leave an important safeguard unexpressed.

Strong Denial Of Accusations
Regarding lumumba's Death Leopoldville: Charges that Catholic priests fomented the death of former Congolese Premier Patrice Lumumba are communist lies, the Bishops of the Congo have declared. The Bishops said the Church was in no way responsible for Mr. Lumumha's death. They did not mention his followers' charge that he was murdered, but said that "political murder is always unacceptable and must be condemned." They added that "if private individuals, or properly constituted authorities acting outside the norms of penal law, take the life of a person . they commit .
All parents, therefore, should read this code carefully, and discuss it with their children. Some few points might be made about the Code. 1 This Code represent, a way of life that would safeguard the moral standards of all children, and reflects a wide area of agreement that would give security to parents and children. 2 It does not create Christian morality, by the assent of young people; that morality is given by God. But it does constitute a valuable application of this morality to the conditions of life that young people themselves know, and adults often guess at. 3
Young
people
should
regard this code as expressing a guide to good behaviour, not a set of rules to be grudgingly and barely obeyed. Morality is a matter of the positive establishment of virtues, not the avoidance of infringement of rules.

They pointed out that in some places Red charges "have already resulted in pillage(' and the destruction of religious buildings, in the total crushing of charitable and educational institutions."
Warning On Reds "Some have dared to lay violedt hands upon persons consecrated to God," _they "In certain cases, added. priests have been mortally injured and even Massacred." They warned Congolese Catholics that one way the Reds are trying to take over the nation is by undermining their confidence in their priests. They also warned that attacks on the Church are only a prelude to attacks on all free institutions.

Others may buy the pipe: to find out what their particular Catholic Society is doing at a certain time; or to follow the feature articles which appear now and then. Today, we are all interested in the tremendous, world-wide movements, sponsoring or discussing religious unity or affiliation. Who can afford to be left behind on such important occurrences that will not merely make 'history,' but provide us with "visible" evidence of Our Lords words: "Even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." The paradox of the world situation is Corn munism striving to annihilate the Church and the sep-
arated brethren striving to regain their place in the one true Fold of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Consider the Catholic press: even if it takes a little bit of humility to concede that although you may think its standard of journalism not high, or the price too costly, etc., etc., . it operates upon the pastoral instruction of the Bishops and is an indispensable element of Catholic life (i.e. the life of the soul as well as the body) which can do us mo:e spiritual good than it can ever do harm. .
