Expansion Of Catholic Schools
The Education Committee of the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party visited Perth last week. A number of informative discussions took place arranged by Mr. Kim Beazley, Federal Member for Fremantle. Amongst bodies which the Committee met were the Teachers' Union, The Parents and Citizens Federation, Public Schools Headmasters, The Catholic Education Office and the Parents and Friends Federation. This report concerns the last two. Through these contacts the Committee gained much first hand knowledge of the difficulties confronting education in Western Australia. Members of the Committee expressed more than once their concern fa: the education of all Australian children without discrimination. Figures were quoted to the Committee which showed that the expansion of numbers in Catholic schools over the period 1946-1959 had almost doubled. It paralleled a similar expansion in State schools. But the expansion in the numbers of teachers in Catholic schools had perforce lagged behind that in State schools. This threw a great burden on teaching staffs in Catholic schools which they could not bear indefinitely. The expansion of Catholic schools had been invaluable to the State education system in relieving and assisting the Education Department in its own crisis of expansion in education provisions. The position could not continue and this had to be faced by responsible Governments. Tribute was paid to the successive concessions that had been made by West
Brisbane of assistance to secondary education was discussed. The value of assistance in this sphere was app.eciated. But the need of primary schools for assistance was not to be neglected since this was a numerous and important phase which was calling more and more for the use of lay teachers. It had also borne the major brunt of accommodating many nationalities of migrant child en brought to Australia through Government policy. The meetings were conducted in a cordial and reciprocative manner. The prayers of all are asked that good may come of them.

Anglicans Of Victoria Park And
Pinjarra Aid Dwellingup Church Some 200 parishioners of St. Peter's Angli can parish, Victoria Park, gathered in their parish hall recently to witness the handing over of cheques to the value of £66 donated by them towards the rebuilding of the Catholic and Methodist churches in Dwellingup. Father Harry Brennan, parish priest of Pinjarra, and the Rev. S. Jenkins, Director of Methodist Home Missions, accepted the gifts in a brief and touching ceremony. The presentation was made by members of St. Peter's vestry who were introduced by the Rev. Ralph Thomas. Father Brennan told the gathering that the money received would not be put into the building fund but would be used to buy something for the altar of the new church and promised that it would be engraved as a permanent record of the fact that it was a gift from the Anglican parish of Victoria Park and a tangible sign of the universal desi:e for church unity. The Rev. Thomas expressed the wish that the gesture of his parishioners would inspire other congregations to similar acts. Earlier in the evening he had spoken to his people on the theme of true Christian and church unity, he said. A further five pounds was received by Father Brennan from Canon Bromilow and the Anglican parishioners of
Pinjarra and the following letter was ceceiverl from Muriel Gilwhite of Cottesloe: " please find enclosed £5 towards the building of your new church at Dwellingup. This contribution is made in the spirit in which St. Peter's Church of England made their doMiss
